Weather/Temp

by kam10

We will be in SD June 6-10 with our kids. I have been watching the temps and it seems very cool. I live in an area where we are in the 90's right now. Will it be too cool for bathing suits on the beach? We do not have to get in the water, but would like to be able to play on the beach. Thanks!

San Diego is well known for the "June gloom" or the wet cool fog that roles in during the AM hours. Late AM early afternoon can be nice, but not hot.

Yes, quite true!

but 'June gloom' many years has extended into July, Aug,......

a possible alternative possibly would be to arrange a couple days down in Rosarito Beach, Mexico, which is just about 20 miles or so south, and they most often have much clearer weather than just that bit north, due to geography.

(I have owned a home there for nearly 30 yrs)

The Rosarito Beach Hotel there is a great place to stay and has a pool as well, and a pier, good beach, restaurants, lots to do and a little taste of Mexico in a secure surrounding... feel free to query me further if this appeals.

If you are coming from 90 degrees, then it will be pretty cool for bathing suits at the beach for you.

San Diego is known for mild weather, rarely too hot or too cold and our really warm weather usually arrives late July through early October. However, as James said, in June, the morning will look pretty grey with heavy clouds, but that burns off late morning as things warm up. If you when you wake the sun is shining brightly, then the day will be even warmer.

I'd say dress in layers when you go to the beach, then as the day warms you can peel off and stay comfortable while playing.

Sorry, I forgot to mention, even though the Marine Layer makes things seem a bit gloomy, you should still use sunscreen. It is still possible to get sunburned through those clouds.

Travel Tips for San Diego

Beautiful escape in San Diego

by Nevo

If you are in San Diego for a few days, I would say that Balboa park is a must! ITs the perfect sunday afternoon strool for anyone to get a little bit of history, culture, and some fresh air. A lot of small little museums comprise balboa park and also a botanic garden. Balboa was the center of the world fair in the 1920 thus San Diego still treats it as a center of attention. Go to balboa park and dont forget a camera!!!!

Visit the Old Town and the historic square, also Balboa Park with its museums, art galleries and the world best zoo. The city was founded back in 1769 and was the first permanent settlement in California.

World famous ZOO

by matcrazy1

Generally I don't like ZOOs, I prefer to see
animals in their natural environment.

But after visiting the world famous San Diego ZOO I changed my mind - they just do fantastic researches on very rare animals which help to protect them. And the educational value of this ZOO is really great.

North Park!

by lmkluque

North Park, a community that is just north of Balboa Park is on the up-swing.

North Park Main Street organization (Like, "Main Street USA.") has been active in it's goal of revitalizing the North Park neighborhood. University Avenue is the main thoroughfare of North Park and most of the action takes place on or near this commercial street.

In the last four years North Park has offered the Thursday Night Market along University Avenue. Ray at Night celebrates the arts and art galleries in North Park. The Stephen and Mary Birch North Park Theatre has been restored and will be the home of the San Diego comic opera group, Lyric Opera. The first presentation is planned for October 2005.

A plan to resurrect the old trolley line--with some of the original trolley cars from the past--down University Avenue and make North Park a walkable community again, is in the works.

by bruingirl

Just like any other American city, tipping is expected on everything. As is customary, make sure you tip 15% for lunch and 20% for dinner. A couple dollars will do for a cab ride. People in San Diego are culturally diverse, like most of California. People are a bit more laid back and friendlier than Los Angeles.
