A First Class Hotel/ You Cannot Beat It

by A TripAdvisor Member

My wife & I just returned from San Diego, Calif, and we stayed for a week at the Residence Inn San Diego Mission Valley/ SeaWorld Area. Our stay was from November 08 - 14, 2004 during that time we were impressed with the hotel its management and staff. Services were great, buffet breakfast was good and food quality was excellent.

We had a one bedroom suite that was always clean and fresh. Carpet, furniture, appliances everything worked exactly the way it should. In fact the housekeeper even loaded the dishwasher and turned it on. It doesn't get any better than that.

The Hotel is back from the freeway so there is no noise that we could hear. Speaking of freeways I-8 East & West is easily accessible, I-5 can be reached from I-8 West bound. SeaWorld is no more than 10 minutes away, San Diego Zoo is about 15 minutes. If shopping is your thing, Mission Valley Mall is 5 minutes east of the hotel, Fashion Valley Mall about 10 minutes.

Hats off to the excellent manager (Ms McClintock, Senior Sales Manager) we met and talk to her on a number of ocassions in fact she arranged for us to view there two bedroom suite for our next visit.

If you are planning to visit San Diego, Calif, we highly recommend the Residence Inn. In fact you may even run into us on your visit.

Do not stay here if you don't like to be spoiled!

Very clean, suites well-equipt, bountiful breakfast, in a nice large room. Staff sincerely thoughtful and accomodating. Their evening social hour was a nice touch: they even had corned beef and cabbage on St. Patrick's Day. Good exercise facilities, pool and Bar-b-que. Central location made it easy to get anywhere. I even forgot its proximity to the freeway after a few nights of relaxation.

Excellent! Thumbs up all the way!!!

This is the first time I've given a hotel I've reviewed five stars. This place deserves it!!! We had a two bedroom, two bath suite, which overlooked the heated pool. It had the most comfortable beds I've ever experienced in a hotel. The pool was actually heated to a comfortable degree and had a huge spa. The morning breakfast was great. Get there early otherwise there will be huge lines and nowhere to sit. Excellent location, but only if you have a rental car. Close to SeaWorld, the beach and Balboa Park. This is a fairly new property and definitely looks it!!!

Please do not waste any more time looking for a place to stay. I am one of those faithful tripadvisor readers and this is the first time I've written a review. My family and I travel extensively as I work for a major airline. I am very particular about where we sleep and I typically play it safe by sticking with the major hotel chains. I had considered other cheaper hotels in Mission Valley and when I saw a couple of the hotels, I was relieved that I hadn't chosen them just to save a few bucks. Many of the hotels in the area are old and outdated.

My husband and 3 kids stayed at this RI during the Christmas holidays. We reserved a one bedroom suite. The room was impeccable and spacious (for California). My husband and I enjoyed the privacy and the kids were grateful that there were 2 tvs in the room. We kept juices and water bottles in the fridge to keep from paying high vending machine prices. We saved money by enjoying the breakfast buffet which actually had a hot food bar. They would usually serve a meat along with eggs and pancakes/french toast. My kids loved making their own waffles. And of course, cold/hot cereal and fresh fruit were also offered.

The staff was great. Do not get a pool view if you want to sleep at night. The person at the front desk was more than happy to give me a different room but I didn't want to hassel with moving our things. The pool closes at 10 p.m.

I paid $129.00 a night and it was worth every penny.

Excellent hotel, good rates

We were very pleased with the Residence Inn. Very clean and well run. We paid 200. for a two bedroom suite. The hotel has a heated pool, a small work out room, a game room ( the kids loved the ping pong table) The rooms were very comfortable. Breakfast was great. The laundry room was only a buck for a washing machine and a buck to two for the dryer. We would absolutely go back to this hotel.

Fantastic!!

We arrived here after the long drive from Los Angeles. Upon checking in we were given a wonderful suite. We felt at home from that point on. The hotel is amazingly lovely with tons of parking. The hot breakfast is wonderful and can fill you till dinner time if you are that hungry! The rooms are super comfy. What more can a person desire when away from home? We came, we saw, we loved this place. Do not hesitate for one moment with your decision to book. Do it now...the word will spread fast. Enjoy!!

Nice hotel, great value

by TripAdvisor Member rambles

We stayed there February,2005. Large, comfortable rooms with full kitchen, wonderful full breakfast at a great price. Easily accessible to all of San Diego's main attractions. We travel to San Diego twice a year, and this will be our first choice from now on. Would seem to be ideal for families with children.

Cheap, Bad Layout and Paper thin walls!

by TripAdvisor Member JoshThePilot

I cannot see how most people give this place a 4 or 5 star rating. The place is new and it is nice but the cons outweigh the pros here. The hotel's layout is very bad and requires you to be a topographer or have a GPS to get around the building. There is no direct passage to the lobby and the only way to get there is to walk around the building to the front entrance or to go to the first floor in the elevator and then walk across the pool/courtyard area. The breakfast is free and that is all it is worth. There is very little hot food and whatever hot food there is, is usually cold and dried out. The juices are made from powder or frozen concentrate. The make your own waffle area becomes a total mess once one of their sloppy guests gets through with it. The breakfast is not good for more than a quick coffee or juice or bowl of cereal in the morning. There is very little good stuff to eat. The location of the hotel is fine and it is close to all the shuttle points for the various tourist attractions. There is free wireless high-speed internet in the lobby and an ethernet port in the room for you to access the free service. There is also one computer in the lobby for the guests use which is fast and has most of the programs people would need to use to finish up small projects, etc.

The rooms have full kitchens and a sitting room with TV set as well as a TV in the bedroom. The washroom is actually 2 seperate areas. One vanity with drawers, sink and mirror and a seperate room for the toilet and bathtub/shower. I never saw one like that before. The walls in the bedroom were paper thin and you could hear the people in the next room talking. I heard quite a bit of mumbling from the person in the room beside mine who seemed drunk. No apology or discount from the front desk after we complained. Just a "We heard that from a few guests, we will tell the manager". It's a good thing we stayed her for only two days as we would have checked out and gone to a better place.

For the price we paid (179USD) we felt this place was far overpriced for what we were getting. Unless you can get a rate below $150USD avoid this place. It may be new, but it's badly designed and cheap.

Look elsewhere for a vacation hotel!

by TripAdvisor Member Bengally

I read the glowing reviews of this property and I thought I had found the perfect place for a family vacation. Unfortunately, I was wrong.

This Residence Inn is new, but the rooms are the same as any of the other hundreds of RI's across the country. Nothing more, nothing less. The standard RI room is nice but hardly worthy of the lavish praise heaped upon it in some of the previous reviews.

This property is on Hotel Circle. If you are not familiar with San Diego (and I wasn't ), Hotel Circle is a frontage road to a freeway. This is a frontage road with all of the negative connotations; ugly, overgrown with weeds, no amenities, nowhere to walk, and an abandoned building just a few yards away. Not quite vacation central. If you are in a hurry to get somewhere, I suppose the proximity to the freeway is a plus.

Sound carries between rooms with remarkable efficiency. We were lucky enough to have some college kids next door. They were talking loud, drinking beer and watching hard-core pornography - the sounds of the movie as well as their cheering echoed through the walls with no problem. They also took their party to the halls. I attempted to call security on the room phone, but the room phone wasn't operational. Luckily, I had my cell with me. I called the front desk and asked them to send someone to quiet them down. The party moved back into the room but the sound eminating from the room was not diminished. This went on until after 1:00 am.

The breakfast is standard fare. Eggs, waffles, cereal etc... nothing remarkable other than perhaps how utterly unremarkable it was.

Parking is $6.00 / night.

If you get a good price, this place works for business travel. No nonsense, clean, practical. Just come when the colleges are in session. For vacation travel, you are better off looking elsewhere.

So surprised at the last review

My husband and I stayed at this hotel from 3/18/05 to 3/26/05. We thought the people at the desk were extremely friendly and helpful and there was nothing we asked for that we didn't receive immediately. Yes we do agree that the lobby wasn't as accessible as in some hotels but we never even thought about that since we were so pleased with nice weather to walk out into we enjoyed the short jaunt. The make your own waffles were the best and the help was there immediately to clean up if anything was spilled. We thought the food was great and we ate breakfast there 7 out of 8 days. My husband's only complaint was that there wasn't any bacon the days we ate there but since they changed the menu daily we just figured that he missed the bacon the morning we ate elsewhere. The hotel is very accessible to everything including the freeways as well as being only a short ride from the airport and the car rental pickup & return areas. The rooms were very spacious with a nice little kitchen and a great seating area with a couch and chairs. It was like staying in a studio apartment rather than a hotel room. We were very pleased and would definitely return there.
