Moving around San Diego with kids and no car
by jumpingnorman
A lady from Indonesia asked about her trip with her kids in California with "NO CAR", and I responded:
You and your children will have fun! But even without a car, there's so much to do around the Hyatt in San Diego where I have stayed myself, and check out some hotels that do have complimentary shuttle transpo to the amusement parks. Ask Hyatt for any recommendations before you go (email). But you are right in that staying near the amusement parks would be better, specially in such a sprawled out place like California where driving cars is the main transportation (although buses do exist but I never needed to use them because I drive instead).
Also, you might be needing some required safety roadway protection in California like "booster seats" for your kids (minimum 40 pounds) if you are in a moving vehicle...it might be hard and expenisve to find a chauffeur-driven rental cars you were planning - usually it's just a limo that would have such a driver and it is expensive (per hour) not mentioning the tip. Being Asian myself, I know this is so unlike in other Asian countries where drivers are easier to hire.
Enjoy your time in California - it's a great state and people will be nice and love kids...

San Diego skyline

I have never seen many skyscrapers at one place in Europe so it was very interesting for me to see them for the first time just in San Diego.
And San Diego skyline is just wonderful. My friend Linda ((lmkluque on VT).
Kensington!

Note: San Diego City Neighborhoods
So many people ask about neighborhoods of San Diego because they are planning to move into the area. So, I've decided to add tips of various neighborhoods in the city of San Diego that don't have their own VT page as Hillcrest and La Jolla have. I'll try to give a general idea of the place as home and what may attract a visitor to the area.
Kensington Park:
Located about 6 miles northeast of downtown, the boundries of Kensington are Interstate-15 to Fairmont Avenue west to east and from El Cajon Boulevard to Interstate-8 south to north.
The main business street of the Kensington Park is Adams Avenue, which is well known throughout San Diego for it's neighborhood coffeehouses, restaurants used bookstores, antique/secondhand shops and most of all for the Adams Avenue Street Faires that are held throughout the year.
Kensington is at the east end of the neighborhoods along Adams Avenue and it is one of the oldest and most attractive. The prices of homes/rentals are higher in this area but well worth considering. The residential streets are winding and full of Spanish style homes, most with lovely well-kept yards. There is a strong sense of community here.
Many long time residents are known for instigating get-togethers and community type activities, such as a local parade for the kids or barbecues in the park on major and minor holidays. This is a community of people who like to jog, walk their dogs and ride bikes. Kensington Coffee Company
Now called San Diego Coffee Company At Kensington!!
There is a new Starbuck's on the corner across the street but San Diego Coffee Co.@ Kensington is still a favorite meeting place of mine. Coffees, Teas, Pastries and Lunch Fare is offered and served well into the evening. Everything I've tried was very tasty. It has just been renovated and is a truely neighborhood friendly place for pet owners.
While waiting for your order to be filled you'll notice, on the counter, a big bowl of dog biscuits, take one, they're free. Outside on the small "sidewalk cafe" section there is a doggie waterdish next to the hose for your thirsty pup. Along the wall, next to the tables are plaques in loving memory of favorite neighborhood dogs.

The Ken Theater
Originally this was the old neighborhood theater. It is still in business. However, it now offers Independent films--read foreign/artsy--that aren't usually shown at the major movie houses. So, if you are a fan of the unique film, this is a place you might be interested in coming to while on vacation.
Old Town Stagecoach
by Pawtuxet
A familiar sight to all of us who have watched cowboy movies over the years. Wells Fargo....about as American as apple pie. The stagecoach was in perfect condition...but I still don't want to travel over the bumpy, dusty roads in one of them....worrying about outlaws all the way across New Mexico!!
