Questions about hotels and getting around San Diego

by epbx

I'm planning a trip to San Diego in July and have some questions. I'm planning on going between the 18th and the 24th. Since the end of the week is during Comic Con, a lot of hotels are blocking rooms off and rates at others are higher than usual. That pretty much means staying downtown isn't necessarily the best option. I'm wondering if anyone can recommend some decent, but budget friendly hotels for me. Ideally, I'd like to be near a trolley station, but I will have a rental car so having a short ride to one is also a possibility. On that note, I've seen some places in Del Mar which are about a half-hour ride to downtown (according to google maps anyway), but I worry a little about what traffic will be like. Alternatively, there's the Best Western Marina Gateway Hotel. It's about an 8 minute walk to the trolley and I can get downtown within a half hour which sounds great. The downside is, it's in National City which I hear isn't exactly the friendliest of areas. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Yes, Comic Con is a huge deal here, but I think it would be possible to find a decent place nearer downtown than Del Mar, to stay at.

I'd say that the National City option would be better for you than Del Mar because rush hour traffic from Del Mar to downtown is really awesome. While during rush hour, traffic between National City to downtown may be clogged at times the distance between the two is much shorter.

The BW Marina Gateway Hotel is located on the west side of Interstate 5, which means it is isolated from the city proper of N.C. It is newly built and in a new bayside complex, so those complaints you may have heard of about National City shouldn't really be any concern. To get to the SD Trolley you walk under the freeway and a block or so more to the station. Also, I do beieve there is ample free parking at the station.

Also, you might like to know, Del Mar is an up-scale section and National City is not. The population in N.C. is more "diverse" and some people feel uncomfortable with that. I've lived there and think the people are friendly, poorer, but nice enough. However, the location of the BW in N.C. is new and pretty nice.

If you dont like National City then go to the next exit on the trolley. That would be "E" St. in Chula Vista. There are 2 or 3 NICE Motels next to trolley. Also International House of Pancakes , a Denny's. A Black Angus and on the other side of Freeway (5 min. walk) a El Torito and an Anthonies Fish grotto. and another 2 nice motels. The trolley from here to COMICON is less than 15 minutes.

When we arrived in San Diego I obtained a local tourist map which had a 'hotel loop' marked on it - many different hotels -so we drove along and chose one

I found something similar on the web

I hope this will be of assistance to you

Thanks everyone for your insight. I don't know the area at all so it's all other than what I've read online so it's very helpful. lmkluque, it sounds like I don't have anything to worry about staying at the Best Western. I'll definitely take a look into the other options, but it sounds pretty good to me.

Ther is an area in San Diego known as Hotel Circle. It is right off the Interstate 8 freeway. Pretty local in my opinion. Plenty of budget hotels there as well. Check it out.

If you decide on the Hotel Circle area; as a former resident of San Diego, but now occassionally coming thru there, that is where I usually stay, at the TRAVELODGE; about the most budget priced, well located, good amenities and nice people at reception.

Travel Tips for San Diego

Avoid San Diego during these dates ....

by iris2002

Hi
As in every major city there are lots of big business conferences.

In San Diego one of the biggest one is the IT Convention happening in late March.

Hotels, flights and rental cars will be heavily booked.

Just thought I let you know !

Also try to avoid the Convention centre area as security and traffic will be on an increase during the event.

For the business heads it's an opportunity however to network... so not all bad ehy :) Shamu and the San Diego Rescue Centre for Dolphins and Seals and other sea animals... you could check if you can help out for a day... LOTS OF fun but very fishy (the smell I mean)

I would take my partner to...

by cramelsweeti

I would take my partner to Hometown Buffet because it has all the food you want and it has it's own dessert bar. Also if it's your birthday the workers sing happy birthday to you. I luv that place The best memory was when it was my birhtday and i went to the beach with my family and we went far into the the ocean and glided on the waves.

On the way back to the car, we saw a wedding taking place. This is the moment where the daughter walks down the aisle with her father. Everyone is turned around to see how beautiful she looks...and her husband-to-be is waiting for her to join him. Ahhh...love! :-)

The first quarter

by venteeocho

The first quarter released in 2005 honors California, and is the 31st in the United States Mint's 50 State Quarters® Program. California was admitted into the Union on September 9, 1850, becoming our Nation’s 31st State. Nicknamed the "Golden State," California’s quarter depicts naturalist and conservationist John Muir admiring Yosemite Valley’s monolithic granite headwall known as "Half Dome" and also contains a soaring California condor. The coin bears the inscriptions "California," "John Muir," "Yosemite Valley" and "1850."

In 1849, the year before California gained statehood, the family of 11-year-old John Muir emigrated from Scotland to the United States, settling in Wisconsin. In 1868, at the age of 30, Muir sailed up the West Coast and landed in San Francisco. He made his home in the Yosemite Valley, describing the Sierra Nevada Mountains as "the Range of Light… the most divinely beautiful of all the mountain chains I have seen." He devoted the rest of his life to the conservation of natural beauty, publishing more than 300 articles and 10 books that expanded his naturalist philosophy.

The 20-member California State Quarter Commission was formed to solicit design concepts from California citizens and to review all submissions. The Commission forwarded 20 design concepts to Governor Gray Davis’s office for further consideration. From these, five were chosen as finalists and sent for final review to the United States Mint. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger chose the final selection from this group of five. The four other design concepts considered included "Waves and Sun," "Gold Miner," "Golden Gate Bridge," and the "Giant Sequoia" design. The Department of Treasury approved the "John Muir/Yosemite Valley" design on April 15, 2004.

They drive alone

by matcrazy1

Most drivers drive alone in their cars. Does it mean that each person has/use its own car?

Hmmm... they support driving with at least 2 persons (including a driver) inside a car - they built special lane (or even 2 lanes) on I-5 called "carpool" on a freeway just for such cars. But sometimes my car was the only one on this lane.

From Chris (balfor):
Americans like their independence and that is reflected in our commuting habits as well. We don't want to carpool to work because we might want to go somewhere else after work. We won't 95% of the time, but we MIGHT want to.

And yes, typically if you have 2 adults in a house (husband and wife) then there will be at least 2 cars. Perhaps even 3 or 4 vehicles. (for example - you both have a car to commute to work, you have a pickup truck for any projects or work that you might need and a convertible for the weekends in the summer. 4 cars for 2 people. Quite a lot different than in Europe.) Oh, and you will frequently find the carpool lanes are also called HOV lanes (for high occupancy vehicles) and are reserved for vehicles like busses, carpools (even if it's only 2 people), cars with alternate fuels like natural gas and motorcycles.
Thank you Chris.
