Skyscrapers
It's not New York but I liked the skyline and skyscrapers of SD. Different views from different parts of the city, always blue skies behind, giving a "modern" touch to this southern, latin, relaxed city.

Hello Group! I have air miles to try to use soon and want to see southern CA for first time in mid May. I'm planning a 3 night stay and saw a nice deal at the Ramada Carlsbad by the Sea near Legoland. We don't need luxury but we hope to drive around and see a lot and I really want to get in the Pacific Ocean for the first time.
The website says the above hotel is a quarter mile from Carsbad State Park beach. Can we swim there? Seems like we could just walk there from the description.
Thanks Jim
Hey Jim,
Technically you can swim there. If you can't for some reason, drive down 10 miles and you'll find a swimming area. SoCal's coasts are pretty laid back.
ok, the map: http://www.ramadacarlsbad.com/map.asp
shows that it is on the western side of I-5, so you don't need to cross that, so yes, you should be able to walk down to the coast. (I lived nearby for 12 yrs)
Any time I'm in San Diego I like to walk across to Tiajuana. I don't bother taking the car across and it's always been kind of a fun way to spend an afternoon.
Hi Jim,
Yes you can swim there, but I doubt you'll want to in May. The water will still be pretty cold then. As I remember the stretch of road near the Ramada is located about three miles south of the village area of Carlsbad and it is more isolated. There is an airport near but I doubt that your flight will land there, unless you are coming from Los Angeles. There is a day use fee and a parking fee at Carlsbad State Beach.
The Ramada maybe a quarter mile from the beach, but if you plan to walk over, it may be a bit further as there is a main road you'll have to cross and no direct crosswalks from the hotel.
Carlsbad State Beach is a lovely beach and Carlsbad a cute little resort town, but might be too remote for your needs. Also, it is about a forty-five minute drive to the downtown area of San Diego, which is where the main airport is located.
I don't know the deal you found at the hotel, but you might take a look at Mission Beach or Pacific Beach as an option. Both are popular beach communities that are geared more for tourists with lots of hotels, restaurants and some shopping. Also, these two beaches are free and within the city of San Diego, much closer to the various sites one might want to visit. The hotels located at Hotel Circle, though not so near a beach, usually offers great prices, especially in the off-season.
I have build pages on Carlsbad, Mission Beach, Pacific Beach and San Diego if you would like to get a better feel for each of these areas.

The San Diego Wild Animal Park, and theSan Diego Zoo.
April through October, Cruising Escondido, Friday Nights 5-9 palm trees next to pine trees, avocado covered hills, smell of orange blossoms in the spring, the smell of sagebrush in the hotter drier times, gently rolling hills - not very many flat places! sunshine most of the year round.
I think Catamaran Resort Hotel itself can be considered a tourist attraction. They have a mini lake keeping many birds like mandarina ducks, black swans, ducks (normal one), and parrots. These animals are well kept, and they love to walk around the resorts. Here, this pair of swan were trying to know into someone's window.
YES SAN DIEGO IS!I LIVE HERE AND I HATE IT WHEN YOU PEOPLE LOOK 100% TOURIST.IM NOT THE ONLY 1
EVERYDAY IN DTWN THERE IS A CLASH BETWEEN A LOCAL AND A TOURIST.IF YOU GO TO THE GHETTOS OF SD PREPARE FOR SOME BAD THINGS UNLESS YOU FIT IN.JUST BE ALERT AND DONT MAKE IT TO OBVIOUS THAT YOU ARE A TOURIST.NOTE::TAKING PICKTURES OF TREES BUILDINGS AND SAYING YOU ARE A TOURST AGGRAVETS LOCALS
I noticed that there are maybe not as many churches/temples etc. in San Diego as in my homecountry but - no doubts about it - there are always clean (look like new ones, just built), well signed (a table with info) and first of all in contrary to my homecountry (95% Roman catholic) there is a huge variety of various religions there.
Isn't it a sign of freedom of religion and/or mixed society?
This Mormon Temple on my picture (really big) is well seen on the left side on the I-5 driving from Los Angeles.
