Allison Hotel

The rooms range from $59.00 (shared bath) to $159.00. Not bad for a place NOT in the tenderloin but just downtown and still affordable.

Unique Quality: A clean, funky, older hotel just two blocks from Union Square and almost next door to The Green Door! (hooray!) This hotel has cute rooms with a great view of the Stockton St. Tunnel. It also has terrific access to downtown San Francisco, which means great access to transportation and SHOPPING! I always tell people to stay here when they visit.

I have stayed at the Beresford...

I have stayed at the Beresford Manor, a student residence located at 860 Sutter Street and I can recommend it without hesitation. It is not expensive and clean, an excellent choice if you are on a tight budget. Also, I stayed at the Allison Hotel (right before the entrance of the Stockton Street tunnel). It is comfortable but more expensive than the Beresford.
