Wyndham at 590 Bush Street: WorldMark Resort Members Only
  • Satisfaction:
  • The WorldMark Club hotels have a reputation for being self-contained resorts located far from where the traditional action would be. This is not the case with the 590 Bush Street (corner of Stockton) Wyndham Hotel, which is the newly renovated 9 story classic old Juliana Hotel building. The studio suites are actually sizeable enough, and ours had a good view across the city. Right above the Stockton Tunnel, Union Square, Chinatown, North Beach, and Nob Hill are all within easy walking distance. TV, refrigerator, microwave, and coffee maker are all part of the suite. The rooms are well kept and the beds comfortable. The downside is that only WorldMark Club members may have access to this hotel. But, considering the patrons I saw coming and going, I'd e-mail or telephone the manager and ask for a rate even if you aren't member. This should be a budget minded hotel, and it's in a great location.

I got off the Powell St. BART and walk a few blocks to find my hotel, The York Hotel. It wasn't the luxury, overpriced hotels in every big city. It was a great find in a great location. The rooms were on the small side, but if you've traveled many cities have small rooms. Plus I was a single traveler so it didn't bother me at all. The hotel also had a breakfast in the morning, small continental breakfast. Just take a few muffins and croissants in your bag and it makes for a great snack in the park.

York Hotel: Boutique Hotel with a Touch of Class & History   Compare Rates NEW!
  • Satisfaction:
  • York hotel is a charming European-style boutique hotel right in the heart of the action (Union Square). It is definitely unlike any typical hotel in that it has a lot of character and charm in a warm/intimate & cozy atmosphere. I knew about this hotel because I'm a fan of Alfred Hitchcock and some scenes in one of his films (my favorite since childhood) called "Vertigo" was filmed there. It is also a hotel that has historical significance in that it was a "speakeasy" during Prohibition in the 1920s and a celebrated hang-out for famous socialites, rich flappers, etc. back then. They have a famous Lounge that remains actively used to this day. All this history, charm, wonderful location around Union Square, amenities, and great service is worth every penny. I remember that the price used to be in the higher price range ($140-$170) for a regular room, but I'm not sure now. Although it seems like they've recently renovated, I checked on-line and the prices appear to be within mid-range. They also seem to have special packages available. Check this hotel out: http://www.yorkhotel.com/ I called them and the personnel at the front desk indicated that there is an extra charge for parking. For self-parking, prepare to pay an extra $25. It sounds reasonable enough to me. (Price based in March 2008) Enjoy this little gem in the heart of San Francisco!

The historical background, the location (it's close to everything), the service, and amenities. It is quite a charming boutique hotel!

York Hotel: Walking distance to Union Square   Compare Rates NEW!
  • Satisfaction:
  • The York Hotel is located just a few short blocks away from Union Square. The staff was nice enough though I didn't really need to ask for anything. The complimentary breakfast in the morning was good and they changed the selection every day that i stayed there. The room was clean and pretty good sized and it had a HUGE walk-in closet. I'd recommend this hotel to anyone that doesn't want to pay a lot of money to stay right on Powell St.

    most hotels: on lockout
As of Oct-Nov 2004 there is a lockout at most of the hotels in San Francisco. The workers contracts were not renewed so many have picket lines around hotels. The people are loud and I would not feel comfortable trying to sleep or moving about the hotel with that type of thing going on. I strongly recommend for the time being that one stays at a bed and breakfast, motel, days inn, econolodge, travelodge, type of place because these seemed to be unaffected.
