I have stayed at this hotel multiple times for several reasons. First and foremost, the location is perfect for access to Fisherman's Wharf, North Beach, the Financial District, Chinatown and Union Square. The price is reasonable especially if you book through the VISA promotional rates on the San Francisco Visitor website. You can also get good rates by booking in advance through the Holiday Inn website with their advance purchase rates. You can join the free frequent stayer Priority Club through Holiday Inn as well and get room upgrades with wonderful views of Coit Tower and the bay. (Rooms facing north) The rooms themselves are standard rooms with no special features, per say, but the location is the key.
The view from the upper floors looking toward Alcatraz are wonderful. The hotel is located about a block from Columbus Ave. and all the North Beach restaurants. It is also on the edge of Chinatown. The MUNI California #1 runs right next to the hotel and the cable car stop is only about two blocks up the hill from the hotel. It is an easy walk to the wharf down Columbus without a lot of hilly streets to climb. The pool is on the roof of the hotel. I have never used it, but have been up there to look out at the view. The last time I was there, the hotel was upgrading and adding a spa. I have not been there since it opened so I have no information on that feature. It is also located right next to the Transamerica Tower (Pyramid Building). You can see it from most everywhere and have a ready made target for getting home in case you get turned around. | | | | Fort Mason Youth Hostel: San Francisco Fisherman's Wharf youth hostel | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
I went to this hostel after having seen the pages on VT; they were very efficient and all, so it was ok. So there I was, getting from the airport to Union Square by BART and taking the cable car to reach Fisherman's Wharf...I was sooo tired after my second night on the uncomfortable chairs of JFK airport, NYC. My bag was late because of the connection that it was stupid enough to miss when I had had to run all the Seattle airport through, thus keeping fit enough. I stayed there for seven or eight nights (it was too long anyway, but not because of the hostel itself). I was quite happy to find a nice place to sleep with clean showers and toilets, free breakfast and friendly staff (except for the warrior princess at the nightly reception desk maybe, but that's another story). My big beloved bag arrived there in the evening, they kept it at the reception and all. I slept in an 8-bed same-sex dormitory which was quite clean and bright, and where I met about a dozen people from everywhere in the world. The common room is maybe a little bit too far away from the reception desk, but it is comfortable and many people hang around there. I had the pleasure of sleeping in a place which was not too far away from all the touristic sights and entertainments (even though I would have liked Fisherman's Wharf to be a little bit further actually ;-)) When you don't have anything to do, you can thus jog along the beach, stroll around Fort mason national Park, read a good book in the common room or cook a bit in the huge kitchen they have (it was enormous). On the whole it's been a very enjoyable experience.
Lots of facilities there...they organise great tours to Yosemite and all, the staff knows at least as much as the tourist office does and is very friendly, very helpful, the cooking facilities make you feel just as though you were at mum and dad's actually (they just have everything you need, true!); the dormitories are clean and safe (you have lockers under your bed), they provide the sheets and you even have four or five payphones in the premises and outside. Breakfast is free and (nearly) unlimited, you can have the internet for free if you bring your own laptop (otherwise you have to pay one dollar for 10 mns, grrrrr), there is a secure safe, lots of great deals, discounts at the local Safeway if you show that you stay at the hostel, a baseball ground nearby,...everything actually! And the reception (with its famous cat) is open 24/7. What more? | | | | Green Tortoise Hostel - San Francisco: Best Hostel-Best Location | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
I stayed at the Green Tortoise during my visit. It was very easy to get to from the BART station and is in a really convenient location in the North Beach neighborhood. Chinatown is less than 5 minutes walk away. My dorm room had only 4 beds which was very civilized. The place was cleaned top to bottom daily, and they provided free bagels, fruit and coffee each morning. On top of that they put on free dinners as well, three times a week, I believe. Between eating free there and cheaply in Chinatown, I saved a lot of money.
This is the only hostel I stayed at that had a SAUNA! Free. It's true. That was a really nice touch. When I arrived it was cold and rainy a lot, so it was nice to heat up after a long day of sightseeing. They also had free internet anytime you want, billiards too. They had a free keg party with a live jazz trio when I was there for Martin Luther King Day, which I thought was outstanding! I met a lot of very serious travellers here-people on round the world trips with well-worn passports. It's a good hostel to make connections for further travel. I heartily recommend this hostel above the others in the city. | | | | Best Western Tuscan Inn At Fishermans Wharf: Perfect Location Compare Rates NEW! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
We recently spent several nights at the BW Tuscan Inn. For our needs, the location was perfect. Several minutes walk will bring you to the Wharf and the cable cars. We easily walked to the North beach area, felt very safe even in the evening. I inquired about an upgrade at check in and was told that they would, and did, upgrade us to a deluxe room. Very comfortable room..bed was great, bathroom and sitting area were wonderful. We had a package that we found on the BW site that included parking. Felt it was a good deal. I would not hesitate to return there. There was no pool or view to speak of..but most of the day time was spend out walking, so that was not an issue. I would recommend a courtyard room , if you want to open your windows, it is much quieter. Great place!
Biscotti and coffee in the morning. wine reception in the evening. Down comforter, comfy bed.
