Excellent Location

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on November 25, 2014

The Hotel Beresford is located at 635 Sutter Street between Mason and Taylor. We booked this accommodation through www.booking.com. We stayed here for 3 nights. We arrived earlier than the official check in time, and were given access to our room. When we arrived at our room, the house keeping staff were still cleaning the bathroom, but we did not have to wait long before they were finished. There was a bit of an odd smell in the corridor of level 4, but the room itself did not smell.

There is no air conditioner in the room. That was OK for when we were there in late October when the weather was moderate, but it may become uncomfortable in a hot summer.

There was also a very loud noise coming from outside the bathroom, so the solution to reduce the noise was to keep the bathroom door closed.

The accommodation has a bar and restaurant downstairs, and a simple complimentary breakfast is provided in that area. Cereals, muffins, yoghurt, coffee, tea and fruit juice is offered.

The location of the hotel is excellent. It is in walking distance to Union Square and China Town and many restaurants and shops. We also walked from the hotel to the famous and picturesque Lombard Street (the crookedest street in the world) and onward to Fisherman's Wharf. By walking, we got a first hand feel of how steep the hills of San Francisco are.

On the same day, we also took a 60 minute boat trip around the bay for $15 per person. The boat went under the Golden Gate Bridge, and past Alcatraz. After the boat trip, we walked toward the marina, past Crissy Green, and then toward the Golden Gate Bridge. It was a long pleasant walk, and the weather was glorious. We walked all the way back to the city centre and to our hotel.

We arranged an airport shuttle pick up from the accommodation through the hotel. It was $15 per person. There were seven people in our van and the driver was punctual, efficient and professional.

The manager on reception was not the friendliest person working in the hospitality industry to either guests or staff. He seemed a bit arrogant at times.

Overall, the accommodation was good value.

Unique Quality: Excellent convenient location.

Directions: Near Union Square and China Town.

Just ok

Terrible (1.0 of 5.0 stars)

Entering the Beresford you feel like you have come to a very nice hotel however, we found the accommodations less than stellar. The rooms are very small and the only window faces out towards a nasty gray building. Also, we asked for a Non-Smoking room and apparently that was out of the question as well. Also, I called the front desk to let them know that out TV wasn't working and they suggested that we rattle the cords in the back of the TV or just try changing it manually. Although, it wasn't an expensive hotel I expected a little more than what we got. Although, the bar down stairs was very nice and the continental breakfast was exceptional.

Unique Quality: The Continental Breakfast was outstanding and the Bar itself was very warm and inviting.

Directions: 2 blocks from Union Square

Good Location on a Budget

Bad (2.0 of 5.0 stars)

The lobby was fairly nice with a few nice chairs to sit in. We had valet parking added for $20 per night and found that the car was brought around quicker than the 15-20 minutes they quote. The halls and our room had a funky smell - probably due to being built in 1911. We had two twin beds in a VERY tiny room with one small window looking out to the brick sides of another building maybe 30 feet away. The bathroom was ok except for the peeling wallpaper. It had a shower only - but water pressure and temperature was good. One nice feature was a small stocked mini-bar under the TV. A continental breakfast is served downstairs at the adjoining White Horse Restaurant & Pub ~ which was a nice place to stop in for a drink at the end of the day. OK.....here's the creepy part.......a COCKROACH crawled over my arm while laying on the bed. My friend also found one in her suitcase ~ which could have been the same one since the one I saw disappeared when I jumped out of bed. To be fair, I don't know if this is what I should expect for this price range in the Union Square area, but I won't be going back.

Unique Quality: This convenient location on Sutter is a close walk to Union Square.

Directions: Near Union Square. See their website link posted below for directions.
