We drove straight from airport to motel in the evening and were not impressed by the surrounding neighborhood. The hotel across the street had some sleazy looking types hanging out--and I wasn't excited to see a huge bright pink thrift store on the next corner selling used clothing for cross dressers either. Nonetheless, the rooms were very clean, and the staff was helpful. Price included parking, and continental breakfast, which was decent if not special. Room had small fridge, iron and board, hair dryer, cable TV, etc. Big surprise--NO AIR CONDITIONING!! And it was HOT the two nights we spent there even tho it was September. And although we had a non-smoking room--the windows had to be opened (due to heat) and the exterior hallway just outside our windows had a smoking area!! When we expressed our concern about this, the night duty person went out and asked the people to stop smoking there and then moved the ash tray further down the hall....but less than ideal. One other thing was that the subway and bus routes were several blocks away. We did get reassurance from the staff that it was safe to walk about at night (we hadn't had dinner yet and it was about 8:30PM), so we did go out without incident. If you are budget minded, and need parking in South Market area, this should work for you--especially if it's not hot outside!
Price was good for San Francisco, especially since it included parking and breakfast. Very clean room, nicely remodeled bathroom. One block from Trader Joe's and Pier One. Close to nice German Mexican and Thai restaurants. Free wireless internet access, plus computer and printer in lobby for guest use at no cost. Heated swimming pool.
