Location, location, location

If Rosemarie had not been sick, this would have been a wonderful stay. She can describe in detail the four walls of our hotel room.
The room had a desk and table as well as two large beds which were comfortable.
There was no fridge, like 99% of American hotels, nor was there facilities to make a cuppa, again like most American hotels. You could, however, catch the lift downstairs and have a cuppa out of a machine down there. Very inconvenient.
Room was clean and serviced regularly.
T.V. with plenty of channels and internet access is free which was much appreciated.
My only real complaint was with the staff. Some were excellent, others not so. It was apparent that some of the staff hadn't been there long and local knowledge wasn't that good with some of the staff but others who apparently had been there for a while were very competent.
The attitude of some of the staff could have been more congenial however.
Breakfast was adequate in the neat little dining room and service was prompt.

Unique Quality: Unlike others, I didn't find the rooms too small. One thing the others have failed to mention is that there is a walk in room where you can put all your luggage and hang it too. This is the main thing that takes away room wherever we stay, i.e. clothes and stuff strewn everywhere. Here we had somewhere to store it.

Great location at a great price

The few negative reviews I'd read about the Chancellor Hotel is actually what made me book it: some people complained that the rooms were too small, with no A/C, sort of like a European hotel - I was sold! The Chancellor is located on Powell Street, just a few steps away from all the action at Union Square. Its central location makes it very easy to get around on foot or by cable car, streetcar, bus or subway (there is a BART station located just down the street). The staff was great and made us feel very comfortable, and yes, our room was somewhat small, but it made it incredibly charming and cozy. The one thing that prevents me from giving it a 5-star rating is the bathroom, which was clean but a little outdated.

Unique Quality: We loved starting everyday with the free coffee and fresh cookies that were available in the lobby! Free Internet is available in all the rooms, and there is a tourist information desk in the lobby through which you can book tours, buy postcards and batteries, etc. There's a small bar in the lobby, and there also is a restaurant called Luques - we had breakfast there one morning and it was very good and reasonably priced.

Stay right on Powell St.

This hotel was great. It didn't cost much more than the average hotel in this city and the location is perfect. It's located right on Powell Street which means right in the heart of the shopping district. It's also just a few short blocks from the BART station. The room was average sized and clean and the hotel staff was friendly and helpful. I also liked the fact that high-speed internet was free in my room.

Superb location, nice clean rooms

by A TripAdvisor Member

A friend and I stayed at the Chancellor Hotel for 4 nights. The location was excellent - right next to Union Square where there were lots of great places to shop and tons of restaurants, and very close to most major attractions. It's a great place to stay for those who do not have cars - the cable car stop is right in front of the hotel, and the hotel is a very short walking distance to the MUNI and BART stations.
The hotel is very clean and nice. The rooms were not very big, but good for 2 people. The walk-in closet was very useful - an iron and ironing board as well as an umbrella were provided (which came in handy). There was also a very small safe located in the closet. This hotel provided more hangers for your clothes than any other hotel I've ever seen. Also the large bathtub was nice although the power of the showerhead could be a lot stronger. They also provided coffee, tea, cookies and fruit in the lobby of the hotel which was great. We tried the restaurant downstairs for breakfast which was good. The front desk was very fast and efficient. We enjoyed our stay here and would go back.

Location. Location. Location PLUS Great Price...! In the heart of the city without giving you a heart attack at checkout.

Very polite staff. Very helpful. Great rooms. FANTASTIC TUBS for bath lovers...they even include a Rubber Duckie.

I hate to let others know about this hotel because I want to keep going back...again and again....

Great Service, Great Price, Great Hotel

by A TripAdvisor Member

This hotel was a great experience for us. We stayed in San Francisco for 5 nights. The hotel is right next to Union square and the cable cars - not a problem with noise. My fiance and I slept prefectly throughout the night. The bath tubs are huge and perfect for a relaxing bath after a long day. The front desk staff and bellmen were fantastic with directions and places to go, along with restaurant recommendations. There is free coffee and cookies, which were both delicious. This was a great hotel at an extremely affordable price when booked on expedia. I recommend this hotel to everyone!!!

Excellant value, we loved the Chancellor

by TripAdvisor Member gavin123

My family had never been to San Francisco before so, we looked on Trip Advisor for help to choose our hotel, the Chancellor received excellant reviews time and time again, so we booked over the internet. The hotel was perfect for us, great service and location (cable cars stop just outside), food, clean rooms, although, bathroom could not be much smaller. Excellant shops and shopping arcades were closeby as were all forms of transport. I will most certainly stay there again and on top of that it was excellant valve for money. Thank you Trip Advisor.

Great location.

This hotel is at Union Square and convenient to most everything. The rooms are small but I've found this to be true in other SF hotels - space is at a premium here and this is to be expected. The bathroom has very little counter space but what fabulous bathtubs and hey - a free rubber ducky! I stayed on the 12th floor at the back of the hotel and heard very little street noise and got good nights' sleep - not the case with other hotels in the area!!! If a good night's sleep is important to you this is the place to stay. Also nice are the parking arrangements - if driving, pull up in front of the hotle in the passenger unloading zone - it's okay to leave your car unattended if travelling alone. Then you will be directed to a parking garage that is a 2 block drive because of the 1 way streets but is really only a half block away on a perpendicular street. When I was there (Feb 2004) the parking rates were $22/day for self park and $30 for valet. There are unlimited in and out privileges with either option. The bathroom was stocked with hair dryer, conditioning shampoo (you'll still need to bring conditioner if you're used to using it), lotion, bath salts, shower cap, q-tips and cotton balls. They also have internet access on the t.v. for a $10/24 hours fee. I did not find the menu for the pillows but found out on check-out that it is in the binder. I could not find any electrical outlets except those in the bathroom. The concierge was very helpful with driving directions. I will definitely stay at this hotel again because of the quiet rooms, reasonable prices and big tub.

Where to stay

by shamre

A friend and I are go to San Francisco Christmas Day for 3 days. We want to be where all the action is. We love live music and dining out. Any advice on what hotel? We are in our 30's and would like it to be romantic and centrally located.

You might consider the Sheraton Palace Hotel, this hotel goes back to the early 1900's It was/is a grand hotel, it is located at Market and New Montgomery Streets. I think you would enjoy it.

We've just come back from staying at the Chancellor Hotel on Union Square (Powell Street) - walking distance, slight uphill!, from airport BART and on cable car line... UNION SQUARE = awesome location! Most awesome beds and quilts + pillow menu.
