Small yet Comfortable Accomodations

This is by no means a fancy place - there is no pool, no room service or anything like that (but there are a ton of coffee shops, restaurants and bars really close by, and a convenience store right next door). Our room was very small, but if you just want a clean, affordable place to sleep in a central location for sightseeing, the Dakota is highly recommended. The only downside is that, since our room overlooked Post St, which is quite busy all times of day and night, we were woken up a few times by sirens and people shouting at 3 in the morning.

Unique Quality: This building is 100 years old, and the elevator is sort of scary. It is kind of like a cage, but you get used to it.

Dakota Hotel - short term...

Dakota Hotel - short term hotel for those who plan to stay in the city for week or longer.
$300-$400/week.

Unique Quality: Not the cheapest short term hotel, but one of the nicer ones I've had the pleasure of staying in.

Take the Super Shuttle for $17.00

http://www.supershuttle.com/default.aspx?content=SanFrancisco

"SFO – Claim your luggage (lower level). Proceed to the upper level and outside to the curb. Follow the SuperShuttle signs to get to the SFO Airport agent (in teal green jackets) and they will arrange your SuperShuttle transportation to your destination. You will wait for your van at Terminal 1 (across from Air Canada) or Terminal 3 across from United door #3. For charters / exclusives please call (800) BLUEVAN (258-3826) and select option 1. If calling from a cell phone (from other than a Bay Area number), select option 3."

Yes, you can take Bart for less money. Get off at the Powell Street BART Station and take a taxi to your hotel. Look at this map:

I would second taking the SuperShuttle

"Quake City Shuttle" will drop you to your hotel for $16. Catchy name and cheapest. Super Shuttle is nineteen bucks per person. BART is about seven bucks, and you gotta lug your stuff three long blocks, or take a cab, which will be another ten dollars, plus the hassle. There's about 50-100 people waiting for a cable car. Good luck getting a taxi.

Unless you're really weighed down with luggage, just walk from BART. It's cheapest and you'll get a chance to see the sights a bit. You can usually pick up a cab at powell and market near the large shopping center if you prefer that option.

On your return, assuming you're flying internationally and want to be there by 11 am or so to deal with security, etc, then I'd say have your super shuttle show up by 10.

On the other hand, BART is extremely reliable in terms of timing, so you could just schedule the trip by consulting www.bart.gov or just pick up a schedule at any station. NOTE that Bart has different weekend schedules with more infrequent pickups.
