looking for safe area
by nissreen
I'm a student new to san francisco and would like to know if 3rd street corridor/kirkwood/la salle is safe area to live in?

Its not a bad area, much of the area is being redeveloped and you have a Muni Metro line right along 3rd that will take you downtown.

Spoke to my daughter (22) who is also a student in San Francisco. She told me that as a student she would not live there. She said it was neither safe or unsafe, but it was mostly industrial. She lives in the area of Ingleside, which is good for State and City colleges, and she said the Presidio area is good for USF students.

Weinstein Art Gallery
by azz8206
I noticed two locations for the Weinstein Art Gallery, both on Powell St. The one I visited was at Union Square. They sell art here and have some wonderful paintings and sketches by Picasso, Chagall and Joan Miro priced from a couple of thousand dollars to half a million dollars. What's great about art galleries is there is no entrance fee and one can roam through them and look at the wonderful art on display.
Do not forget to tip
by SLLiew
Unlike in Asia, you are expected to give a 10-15% tip at Chinese restaurants in San Francisco Chinatown and in USA. Unless, it is a quick take-away (to go).
Try these popular Americanized Chinese food:
1) Gong Pu Chicken
2) Mushi Pork (wrapping shredded meat and vegetables)
3) Chop Sui Yee (mixed leftover, recooked)
4) Lemon Sherbet (poor man's choice for ice cream)
5) Fortune cookies
Go for dim-sum too, just do not forget to tip when the bill comes to avoid angry faces.
There is convenient underground public parking near Chinatown.
Step DOWN !
by EdinburghRoc
When getting of the bus you need to step down or the doors will not open.
Most buses tell you when you are at stops. Carry a map and listen or read the screen. You will then know where you are at all times.
STEP DOWN !
Carry the City Pass and travel on any transport. GOLDEN GATE PARK I though cool.
And Cable Cars !
A really romantic city.

Walk along the water with your significant other and enjoy the crisp, salty air. I was on a business trip for a few weeks and my boyfriend came to visit me for a weekend. We walked around the Embarcadero and the Financial District. We got lost in Chinatown which was really interesting because it feels like you're really in another country!
Walk across the Golden Gate...
by JERICO
Walk across the Golden Gate Bridge, and bring warm clothes (SF can get warm in the daytime, but its almost always chilly at night, and it rains fairly consistently from January - March). I used to go to the roof of my building and watch the sunset. The views in every direction from SF are breathtaking - and there's nothing quite like the Pacific Ocean! This was taken from my old roof (if you click on it, you can see the Golden Gate Bridge to the left side, and Mt. Tamalpais on the right side, in the distance). Mt. Tam (as the locals refer to it, perhaps because no one is quite sure how to pronounce 'Tamalpais'?!) is the largest mountain in the immediate area at 2571 feet, along with Mt. Diablo to the east (3849 feet, visible on a clear day from the taller hills around SF, as well as from the Golden Gate bridge). Mt. Tam is sometimes called the Sleeping Lady.
