Preparing for our Trip
by VeronicaG
One of the smartest things I did before our trip was to write to fellow VTer, CALLAVETTA, who lives in the San Francisco area and ask for advice on what to see or do there. Along with her suggestions and some extended research on my part, our family enjoyed a very exciting and fulfilling week!
Loaded down with two maps and a guidebook, we rode the trolley and cable car, cruised the Bay to Alcatraz and then Sausolito, traveled over the Golden Gate Bridge several times, rented a car to enjoy wine country and lastly experienced the beauty of Yosemite. The preparation was the key--we saw all that we had planned, plus a few added extras.

What to wear
by altizachen
If you want to know what the weather will be like when you come to visit… don’t watch the weather report. They’ll tell you it will be sunny and as soon as you step outside it’s foggy and rainy.
In San Francisco it’s best just to dress in layers since the weather is about as unpredictable as the people who live here. Many people come here thinking, "oh.. I'm gonna be in sunny Calfornia!" only to find themselves frozen like an Eskimo. Go down to Chinatown and by a few t-shirts for $10 and a few sweatshirts for $30. Bring your jacket from home.
Bundle up!
The cable car experience
by Skigirl
Hopping on a cable car and traveling up and down the hills of San Francisco. Riding the cable car at 11:30 pm from Nob Hill to Fisherman's Wharf to Union Square with all of the city lights and the bay as a back drop.

If you want to explore the city inch by inch, bring some time... I would say a week or so is fine, and if you come by car... PARK IT! Driving thru the city is already a challenge and a tough job on ur brakes (try Divisadero all the way between Lombard and Haight or Jones descending from Nob Hill, just to mention a few...), plus you will not have the frustrating task to find a parking lot ( i circled around Nob Hill for almost 90 minutes at a friday nite, i think i know the location of every hydrant within a 2 mile radius there...)
So use BART, MUNI, CALTRAIN or whatever, take a bus or streetcar, or walk (can be quite an excercise...)
Also be prepared to spent more money than expected... it is very tempting, plus SF is not really a bargain, but still... I found every $$$ was worth spending, so make sure you got plenty of those ;)

Visit the Presidio National Park. It is a military base turned national park. This is where you can visit the Golden Gate Bridge. I really enjoy going to Alamo Square Park and looking out at the city. It is so beautiful and relaxing. You will also be able to see some of the 'Painted Ladies' -San Francisco's Victorian Houses. They are picture perfect.
