Probably the cheapest Hostel in central downtown.
Although from the exterior this hostel looks a bit run down. Its run by backpackers, for backpackers.
The location is excellent, ironically opposite the Hilton in Union Square. (On Ellis)
The rooms are a little cramped, but if you're lucky you'll get some great views from certain rooms.
They have a kitchen, which has all you would need to cook away and avoid the expense of San Fran.
The staff are excellent also, mostly run by Dutch and German backpackers, they speak excellent English, and know the area very well.
A common area is located next to the kitchen, so you will find yourself chatting with other travelers.
I stayed in a 6 bed, in peak season @ $28 a night. However, you can shave off a few $ by booking online.
Overall, its great.
