Ode To HWY 1
by PilotGal
Take a ride from Santa Cruz north on Hwy 1 north to San Francisco. Pull over and take as many photo's as you can. It's all breathtaking, and every turn has different visuals.. Fog, Pine trees, golden hills, dark oak trees, dark blue sky's, yellow green pastures in Salinas Valley.
The neighborhoods of San Francisco, make you feel like you're in a small little town in a very large metropolis. The city embraces you. The people are friendly, caring, won't let you get on the wrong bus. The weather is perfect for a long sleeve cotton t shirt, most of the day. At night, a good windbreaker is all you need. Carry your camera everywhere you go. Check out the neighborhoods. The public library has all kinds of little explorations for free in all the different neighborhoods. I did the walking tour of the Castro. there was a historic mansion tour in Pacifica, walking tours of Upper Haight and Lower Haight. Walking along the streets at night, and feeling absolutely safe. Sitting at a bus stop, talking to all the different people waiting for the bus. Meeting people on the buses that were willing to walk you in the direction of where you are going. And most of all... there's a Trader Joe's conveniently located in town for all of your needs! God bless you Trader Joe's!!
Getting around in San Francisco
by Aussiegolfer
Visiting San Franciso by foot is easily done. We found that the Cable Cars were a great way of getting around. Also you may find that some hotels offer a courtesy bus that runs to and from the hotel to Union square. By using both these means of transport and adding a little footwork we managerd to spent 3 days visiting the city and its attractions. the public Transport during the day is great, however we didn't travel at night so we can comment on that.
You can hop on and off the Cable cars without cost, however sometimes you may have to pay only a couple of US dollars if pulled up by a conductor (which is usually at the start of end of the lines). I found San Francisco really tourist friendly, especially at the Piers, Nob Hill, and Union square.
Transamerica Building

Also known as the Pyramid building. This is one of San Francisco's most recognisable buildings as it's in the shape of a Pyramid!
It can be located on Montgomery Street which is in the Financial District.

There are such wonderful things to see in San Francisco - the Golden Gate bridge, Alcatraz and the Pier. There is also great shopping and lots of buskers lining the sidewalks. Terrific restaurants and eateries and we sampled a lot of them! We loved seeing Maceys all decorated for Christmas. Travelling around the city was easy as you can buy a pass thet allows you to use all the facilities, such as, the buses, trams and trains. San Frqncisco was the highlight of our trip to the west coast of America and we have lots of wonderful memories, such as having dinner at Cliff House overlooking the ocean as the sun was setting. We travelled there from the city by bus and then walked up to the restaurant.
