great family hostel in a quiet location.
fort mason hostel is located very centrally but also in a quiet location as it's in a park.
it's situated right next to fishermans wharf and you have a superb seaview from the hostels cafe.
the place is fine for everyone, but i would say that it suits families and student groups particulary well, aswell as people who don't care too much about nightlife but want to stay in a quiet place.
Unique Quality: the staff is very professional and friendly and the location is perfect for sightseeing.

Most Affordable room with a view
Well, I must admit that I have not stayed here because I live just a few blocks away, but several of my friends live and work here, and I would recommend it to friends visiting. It is a beautiful place with my favorite flower garden in the whole city. I also believe that this is the breeding ground for those wild parrots (made famous in the film the wild parrots of telegraph hill). The cafe at the hostel sells really affordable and yummy sandwiches, and they have cheap laundry facilities.
The dorm rooms seem a bit crowded, but it's San Francisco it is expensive to rent anything here.

Fort Mason youth hostel
Price: $22-25
Unique Quality: The location in the middle of a park is wonderful! On one side, a nice view of the golden brigde and the see and on the other side, a nice view of the city. It is very quiet and peaceful. Walking or running in the park in the morning is a good way to have energy for the whole day! Rooms are clean, the breakfast cafetaria is very cosy! And it is near Hyde Street and the cable car :-)
