Hotel Palomar is part of the Kimpton Hotel group. It is located in downtown San Francisco, at 4th Street and Market, just a short walk from the cable car turnaround and surrounded by shops and activity. We found the location nice and central for sight seeing all over the city and would certainly recommend the Palomar.
Unique Quality: We stayed in an Executive King Room which was great - modern, spacious enough for us, in good condition, comfortable. Nice big bed, flat screen TV, mini bar, large bathroom. I also loved the fact that our room had views over Market Street, looking up towards Union Square. Good for checking out the hustle and bustle, and the early morning calm.
Each evening the hotel offers complimentary wine tasting in the lobby for hotel guests, though our schedules never coincided with us being able to take advantage of this. All staff we came in contact with were very friendly and helpful. We would return.

Hotel Palomar is a largish Kimpton boutique hotel located at the corner of Market Street and 4th Street -- in other words, just in the middle of everything in San Francisco.
The rooms are decorated with good quality materials and the colour scheme is subdued and relaxed. The big bed is really comfortable, and the bedclothes are excellent -- not the usual crap of US hotels. The hotel is also very quiet, but I had a room facing the inner yard; the rooms facing Market Street might be noisier.
Service at the front desk is swift, but not very thorough. They managed not to join two consecutive reservations to one -- I told about it only twice... Well, the situation was corrected pretty fast.

From its location right on the corner of 4th and Market, I wouldn't have expected the Palomar to be such a quiet, intimate hotel. This hotel occupies upper floors of a retail building, with only an entrance and reception - hardly a lobby - at the ground level. (There is some lobby space adjacent to the bar/restaurant on the fifth floor.) The staff is friendly, upbeat and helpful. My room faced the inner courtyard (thankfully!) but was bright, with a nice proportion (single King) and a warm, stylish decor (contemporary deco). Fast internet access and a CD player were much appreciated. The fitness center is tiny, but serviceable.
The Fifth Floor restaurant serves innovative French-inspired fare; I had delicious duck accompanied by an exquisite glass of burgundy. It is upscale but not too snobbish, in line with the character of the hotel.
All in all this was one of the best hotel stays I had in San Francisco. I will surely return.

Swanky contemporary hotel near Union Square. Fancy enough to put your clients up, fun enough to go yourself. Nice accomodations and staff.

Defining urban luxury and sophistication in downtown San Francisco, the boutique Hotel Palomar offers 198 Zen-like guestrooms and 16 suites. Rooms feature elegant simplicity, clean lines, and tailored furnishings with their signature leopard print carpeting. Each has down comforters, robes, and VCRs.
I have stayed here a few times and love it each time. Especially love the location - across the street from a fantastic Sephora.

Simple lined, understated by rich detail, Palomar's guest rooms are tailored based on the geometry of a square. Emerald green squares protrude from the headboard and the bed is finished with a plush down comforter and densely packed down pillows. Following an urban, sophisticated look, the walls are covered in a natural raffia weave and carpets are a playful leopard print, tamed with tones of blue, gold and ivory. The bathrooms all feature Aveda bath products. The service in the hotel is seamless, with out flaw or peer, the professional staff anticipate the guests every need and caters to individual preference. The hotel also boasts a fitness center, for the health minded guests to use at their leisure.

i fell in love with Hotel Palomar the moment we stepped into the receiving area! i adore the 'zen' feel of the room and the 5th floor lounge is so peaceful, so modern, so wonderful. we love everything about this hotel! great location, too!
From the moment we arrived at the Hotel Palomar we knew we had found a wonderful hotel. The staff went out of their way to assist us with recommendations for the area as well as getting us settled into our room. Any questions we had were quickly answered. We stayed there 2 nights, January 20-23, 2004. The first night we stayed in the deluxe King room which we found to be spacious and beautifully decorated.
Aveda bath products made for a relaxing shower. The second night they upgraded us to a room with a jacuzzi. Because we were out during the day they even moved our luggage for us to the new room. The jacuzzi was large enough for 2 (as was the shower next to it) and it was sooooo relaxing. Each room has a CD player, TV, mini-bar, and lots for business travelers (such as fax & internet). The beds have puffy down pillows and a down comforter so it was very cozy. Everyone from the doormen who opened the door as we rounded the corner towards the hotel to the front desk workers went out of their way to make us feel welcome and pampered. The hotel location is perfect as well since it is just 1 block from the cable car and underground and the buses and street cars stop right at the corner. See's candy being about 1/2 block away was nice too! The Hotel Palomar was the perfect spot to see San Francisco and made for a romantic get-away. I would happily return and heartily recommend it to anyone looking for a place to see the city while being treated like royalty.
My son has asked me to do some research since so his girlfriend will not know that they are getting engaged. They are going to SF for a wedding on Sat and he wants to propose on Tues or Wed. They will be staying one night at Fishermans wharf and the next night at Union square. He has found VERY expensive restaurants but the food items are not for her. She is a very picky eater and he needs a restaurant with a more normal not gourmet menu. Can anyone suggest a reasonable romantic restaurant with steak, chicken etc that is appropriate for getting engaged. Please help him he is trying to make it lovely but yet affordable!
