Triton Hotel (designerhotel)
Unique Quality: The Triton is an individually furnished hotel with alot of funny details. The guestrooms are a little small. Do not share one room with four people, if you don't really like your roommates.

The Hotel Triton is a funky hotel. Stay in a room decorated by Jerry Garcia or Santana. Get celebrity wake up calls. Rent a feather boa. There's a Horoscope hotline in the lobby. It's just as eclectic as San Francisco. (800) 800-1299.

hotel advice
Hi, thinking of flying to S.F. for one week, 3rd or 4th week of april, looking for advice on a hotel in the downtown area that we will not need a car to get to most of the interesting sights of S.F. we looking for clean and moderatly priced(under$125. or so) Also at that time of year should a person book a room for the whole stay or should we just book for 1 or 2 nights then wing it? May rent a car and do some sight seeing in the outer area.

I recommend checking out the Kimpton Hotels. www.kimptonhotels.com. Their hotels often have special "hot dates, great rate" deals as low as $99. My favorite is the Hotel Triton, which is right at the entrance to Chinatown, on the fringe of Union Square. Last time I stayed there for a business meeting, it was $130/night.
Personality Hotels is a small group of funky hotels. wwwpersonalityhotels.com. I have stayed at the Hotel Diva on Geary Street a few times for less than $125. It's in the Union Square area, as are the other Personality properties, I believe.

You can easily get a room at many of the "boutique" hotels near Union Square for your price range. King George seems to be a popular one. From there you can easily hop on cable cars and the bus system to get anywhere you want in San Francisco. :-)

If you are staying around Union Square, a car is not a good idea, because parking is quite expensive. Public transportations will get you to most places, and you can get a weekly fare to save money. Daily car rental is also available around the city.

I agree with the Klimpton Hotels advice. We stayed at the Serrano which was perfect since we had theater tickets at a nearby theater.
