Perfect location, gallery of local artists

This was the perfect spot. If you were going to put a pin on a map this would be it. Right next to our convention and just a block to Union Square shopping and restaurants.
We had fun exploring the French Quarter alleys and streets. The staff was great with helping us out and recommendations.
The gallery of local artists gave us a flavor for San Francisco you don't get at a vanilla chain hotel.
Thanks for the great trip.

Unique Quality: perfect location,
victorian charm,
gallery of local artists,
great staff,
nearby dining and shopping,
transportation - cable car, street car

Artsy and noisy!

Though the decor and overall ambiance of this hotel was hip, classy, and welcoming, the staff and clientel were not. Two nights in a row we had a drunk woman yelling in German outside our door. Another thing that interrupted our zzzzzzs was the constant dinging of the hotel doorbell as each guest rang to be let in (all night long). At 3am my fiance went to the desk to ask if the sound could be muted somehow and the smug woman working the desk looked at him like he was insane. The staff was generally unhelpful and snooty in a self-conscious kind of way.

Unique Quality: Each room is designed by an emerging artist and follows a unique theme. Very cool.
Also, there is a daily continental breakfast.

Wow, great value, great location

We got a steal on this place. Great value for the money. Great location. You step out of your room and you can catch public transport or just walk to any place you want to be. You can request microwave/fridge in your room, and you do get an included "continental" breakfast. Free wireless. Lots of fun/interesting art.

You need to be a person who is used to staying in European style hotels. The elevator is a little tricky, and a lot of times you may just prefer to use the stairs. So...not a place for people with mobility issues. However, if you are a person who came to hike the Golden Gate Bridge, hike up the Greenwich Stairs to the Coit Tower, hike Angel Island, etcetera...a few stairs are not going to stop you, right?

The staff was terrific. If you have a late flight, which is apparently a common thing for SFO, they have no problem holding your bags after you check-out so you can hike around, enjoy your day, and then pick up your bag before you head to the airport. They answered all our questions, always had little tourist maps to explain things, etc. Very nice people to do business with. I can't promise everyone will get the incredible deal we got, because we got a low season price (and lucked out with beautiful weather) but I think you will be impressed if you compare what they offer with the other area hotels.

Unique Quality: The art was fun, and the location near the Chinatown gate was superb!

Good location, inexpensive in an expensive city

Good location. At the foot of Chinatown and near much transportation.

Unique Quality: Has art in each room....mine was ....interesting.
And much more all over the building. Free brekkie and it's not too bad as far as American brekkies go.

Convenient Hotel on Bush St.

This place has received a lot of good reviews, but I wasn't as impressed. What makes this hotel unique is that various local artists painted the walls of each room. However, the "suite" we were in was very small. There was one room with just enough space for two beds and a third small, "living room" with a table, TV, refridgerator and futon. Nonetheless, they were clean rooms and the hotel has nice staff, so for the most part I was happy. A couple of problems: the shower water pressure was very low (and never fixed), the free wireless that they advertised didn't work, and housekeeping woke me up at 8 AM (!) to clean the room. The location is very nice (near china town, about a 10 min walk to embarcadero) and a BART line is only 2 blocks away. However, it can get pretty loud in the morning with all the traffic.

Unique Quality: What makes this hotel unique is that various local artists painted the walls of each room. Although it is a nice change from normal walls, (at least in the room that I was in) I was not amazed by any of it (and could have easily been ok without it). The nice addition is flat screen TV, DVD player, refridgerator, and microwave.

More about Hotel des Arts

Very lovely hotel

by A TripAdvisor Member

I really enjoyed my stay at the Hotel des Arts. Our room was fantastic. The paintings on the wall were really enjoyable to look at. Its just a very interesting place to stay. We go to San Francisco every year from New Orleans and I would love to stay there again.

Fresh Art!

by A TripAdvisor Member

As a painter myself, I have been influenced and inspired by many of SanFrancisco's underground and emerging fine artists. I stayed in "Hotel des Arts" specifically for the art, and I was NOT disappointed.

Great Location!

by A TripAdvisor Member

The location of The Hotel des Arts is without a doubt its highlight. The hotel is basic; very clean and small and quaint with a European feel to it. But when the rates are so inexpensive one is not expecting a restaurant and swimming pool. But you step out of the hotel there is a neat little Irish eatery and pub on your right and a Starbucks on your left. Then right across the street diagonaly is The China Town Gate which marks the entrance to China Town. The other way right down the street is the buisness distric and the Transamerica Building. And if you like a nice walk then all the other major San Francisco sites are within a stroll (Fisherman's Warf is only 15 minutes waslk away). If you want a romantic getaway weekend to San Francisco then I would suggest a posher place. But if you are looking at really exploring or touring San Francisco and plan to spend most of your time outside then this hotel is ideal. You can't find a better hotel with this type of location at this very reasonable rate. Save the money you would spend on another expensive hotel and stay at the Hotel des Arts and enjoy San Francisco even longer.

Lovely Hotel

by A TripAdvisor Member

I appreciate the atmosphere Hotels, such as the Des Arts provide. I get tired of the blanket Hospital like qualities of many hotels. The des Arts provides that much needed pulse. The room was comfortable and my wife and I immediately felt at home.

The shared bathroom, which concerned my wife at first, was not only convenient but we never had to wait to use it.

The only concern I had, was the quality of the bagels provided in the morning. I love knowing that I can just hop down the hall or stairs in the morning, and grab my breakfast without having to get dressed and shower, etc. After our first encounter with the bagels I was forced to stray from this connivence. The bagels did not taste bad, but they were brittle and dry. I assume there are plenty of places to get bagels from in SF. I suggest finding a new one.

Other than the poor bagel, and that being a minor, almost insignificant detail, I loved the hotel and our stay. Thank you Hotel des Arts, we'll be back!

Sleepless in San Francisco

by A TripAdvisor Member

We thought the Hotel des Arts was quaint and super clean with simplistic designs and modern lighting that highlighted the artwork that filled the hallways. I thoroughly appreciated the artwork (various modern styles by local artists) but my spouse was not as enthusiastic of its style. We were quite pleased to be upgraded to an artist room but were saddened when we were awaken at 4am to the loud sounds in the alley below - it was a dump truck...picking up recyclable glass. Tumbling and breaking glass is very noisy! We could hear it crash and break piece by piece. This lasted about 45 minutes. It interrupted our sleep and made us miss an early morning of San Francisco sightseeing. Rightfully so, we were both on edge so I asked the front desk attendant if we could be moved to the other side of the hotel but he assured us that the trucks only come twice a week - and never two consecutive nights. He was wrong. We were awaken yet again at 4am the NEXT night! Also, there is no air conditioning in this hotel so if you cannot stand the heat, I do not recommend staying here in the summer months. They have a limited number of floor fans which are available upon request.

I'd stay here again as the hotel is it is a clean affordable hotel in a good location but I would definitely not stay here in the summer months ... plus I'd be more adamate to request a room on the eastside as the westside of the building left us with sleepless nights.

Which hotel should we choose?

by vanessa130

My husband and I will be visiting SF in late July and we have narrowed down our hotel choices to the following:

Hotel des Arts
The Crescent
Hotel Frank

Can you please let me know which hotel you would choose and why?

Thank you!

The reviews for the Hotel Frank and the Hotel des Arts are both good. The Hotel Ccresent would probably be a mistake. The Hotel Frank is probably in a better location.
