New Years Day 2011

by YVR2010

Hi all,

we'll be arriving on Jan 1st and I was wondering if many shops or restaurants will be open. We are staying near Market & 4th and prefer to walk & take transit.

I'll probably bring my ksates for the outdoor arenas but are there any other special events til Jan 5th?

Re: New Years Day 2011

by riorich55

I was trying to figure out what ksates were and then I figured out it was a typo for skates. And in regard to the skates it looked like there were a lot of skaters right across the street from Pier 1 so you can take them down there. I'm sure there will be businesses and restaurants closed on that day, but I'm also sure that there will be many, many that will be open so you'll just have to explore which in San Francisco is a great thing to do. We just got back from a trip in November. My favorite U.S. city.

ahh sorry about the typo...it is "skates" I'm aware of the rinks but are there any "specifics" for that day?

thanks for the reply!!

That I don't know, but others who live in the area might. Have fun!!

there's a rink down on the embarcadero at market street.

other than that, check out this website for events.

http://eventful.com/

but, i wouldn't pay to skate in circles. the embarcadero is super smooth. you can skate from south beach to fort mason practically!

LOL, I think YVR2010 means ice skating. I know weather is bad this years but, Ice on Embarcadero might be wishful to a Canadian.

Should have picked up on that clue, but Vancouver and Toronto seem almost more American then Canadian the times I've visited them.

thanks for the tips guys! looking forward to visiting our "true" sister city

The Embarcadero wintertime rink is joined by one right on Union Square this year--these are created ice areas of course, as the winter temperatures in SF are in the 50's to 60'sF. I saw ice skate rentals to adults and children being very popular when I walked through X-mas Eve, but I don't know if this will continue after Jan 1st. See my X-mas Union Square tip...

Yes, the Union Square ice rink will stay open until Jan 17th. Check out my Sports Travel tip for the link--positive rating for this new tip encouraged :-)

Travel Tips for San Francisco

The best Ice Cream Sandwich, It's It

by travelgourmet

Back in the day, one of my favorite things to do in San Francisco was to go to the Playland at the Beach. Not there any longer but the memory, I still find a ride by the Golden Gate Bridge and around to the beach side of San Francisco a refreshing drive to stop and look back at the Golden Gate Bridge from Baker Beach. Every summer while I was young, I would vist San Francisco with my grandparents and the San Francisco treat was to go to Playland at the Beach and go into the fun house, ride the wooden giant slide and the spinning record, then tired out, go for a refreshing "It's It" ice cream sandwich. It was dipped right before your eyes in chocolate. A scoop of vanilla ice cream between two oatmeal raisin cookies to make the sandwich then dipped into chocolate syrup. It's It eaten at the Playland in San Francisco is a bygone memory but I still eat an It's It that I buy at my neighborhood grocery store. Still YUMMY! and it brings back the happy memories of the clang, clang of the cable cars, the shrill cry of the seagulls at Fisherman's Wharf, the fog horn from the Golden Gate Bridge and the fun house at Playland at the Beach. You can still hear the clang, clang of the cable cars, the shrill of the gulls and the deep loud sound of the fog horn but you will have to imagine the Playland as you eat an It's It you purchased from a grocery store.

Take your breath away..

If your like me and can only stay in the city for a short while-the wilderness of the still 'wild West' is close in every direction. So many thousands of protected wooded hills complete with mountain lions, bob cats deer and other furry delights. Oh and look up to the skies..red tailed hawks long eared owls.. sea vultures.. and the delightful pelicans!
Half Moon Bay has 7 miles of powder white sands... see only a handful of locals spread out , usualy sitting miles apart with their dog watching the sun rise/set.. or just meditating, drawing energy from the turbulent ocean waves.
The fog is more prevelant on the coast. I've emmigrated here twice.
Like the song.. 'i left my heart in SFO' !
Before we came back again... i used to cry when i saw the Golden Gate Bridge on Films, and i used to think... i used to live just behind that curveture of rock's. How could i ever have left it all behind !?
I'm back, I'm Blessed xx

Why San Francisco?????..........hmmmmm

Leaving San Francisco is like saying goodbye to an old sweetheart. You want to linger as long as possible.......Walter Conkite

San Francisco..... A place where you will leave your heart.

Funny but it took a second trip to this city to make me fall in love with it. Probably, it really helps when you’re out here with a special person. Going back the second time, everything was just so different. Everything looks so lovely and beautiful.

Boat Ride
The weather is perfect, the fog was so cooperative coz it didn’t hide the enchanting Golden Gate. I even had the chance to take the one-hour boat ride around the Bay where you can have the perfect view of San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate. SF is always cold especially during the boat ride but don’t worry coz blankets are provided by the friendly tour guides.

THE ROCK
But boat ride isn’t enough when youre in SF. We were one of the lucky ones who were able to buy a ticket for the Alcatraz Tour on that day without making reservations. But if you’re one of those who are trying to follow an itinerary and only have a few days in SF I suggest that you reserve or buy a ticket in advance. Alcatraz is worth seeing and who knows you might even have a chitchat with one of those men that was imprisoned at “THE ROCK”. I even had a picture taken with one of them.

A trolley ride around SF is also a fun way of seeing China Town, Lombard street, Nob Hill and all the other hills...cant remember anymore the names of the streets. All I remember is that I was so happy at that time.

Don’t miss this
Sunset at Pacifica............the view is just awesome and spectacular. When youre done with the bustling and chaotic Pier 39, drive down Pacifica and relax while watching the sun setting. A very romantic place.

Yummmmy food
Visiting San Francisco is not enough if you haven’t tried the Clam chowder...ooohh heaven; the fish and chips at Fisherman’s Wharf and eating at Chics Seafood.

Go to Alcatraz. Sitting in the wind outside on that island after your round trip through this jail, you realize that it is better to work for money than get it on a easier way, because freedom ...you cannot buy!

San Francisco Tip

Fleishacker pool in the 60's. Largest salt-water pool is gone now. Also Playland at the Beach, the amusement park. The Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane used to play in Golden Gate Park. I still love Ocean Beach and the downtown area.
