Location - AND afternoon Sherry!
If you go online you'll see this hotel rated only as a 2-star hotel.
Well, I don't stay in dumps (at least not any more, in my old age) and, I enjoy nice accomodations - which is what I think this place is.
Frommers travel books claims it's one of the best values in San Francisco. It's easy on the budget and best of all, it's in a great location (the Marina District, which is within walking distance of Golden Gate Bridge, the Wharf, Ghiradelli Square, Coit Tower, Lombard Street, and even North Beach area.)
Unique Quality: It's more like a bed and breakfast and only has 40 rooms, tastefully decorated if not a bit on the small side. The building itself is historic, built in 1924 and having survived several earthquakes. There's a lovely marble lobby and one of my favorite features, their cozy sitting room where sherry is served at 4:00pm every afternoon, on the house. Clean and safe.
I enjoyed staying here and would consider staying here again - like I said, you can't beat the location.

Budget Hotel
We stayed one night at the Marina Inn on Lombard and Octavia. We paid $77 for a double room including taxes. This is a very reasonable price in San Francisco.
The Marina Inn considers itself a Bed and Breakfast. It has 40 rooms.
The hotel is NON-SMOKING AND PET FREE.
The building is a 4 story building, built in 1924. It has a lot more character than the other motels on Lombard Street.
Parking is on the street but difficult to find. However, the Marina Inn has an arrangement with the Star Motel across the street where one can park for $10.
Unique Quality: Clean but small room; large bathroom.
Floral bedspread, pine furniture, TV, telephone.
Friendly staff.
We asked for an "inside" room because of the noise in rooms facing Lombard Street. Unfortunately, we had noisy neighbors in the room downstairs and had problems sleeping. The walls are very thin.
Breakfast is continental and included in the price of the room. It's served on the second floor and trays are available to bring food to your room.
Well located a few blocks away from Union and Chestnut Streets (lots of cute shops there and not as touristy as Union Square)

The Marina Inn
Unique Quality: This is a smallish inn on the Lombard Motel strip. While not as convenient as Union Square, you are still within decent walking distance of Russian Hill, the shopping on Union Street, Ghiradelli Square and Fisherman's Wharf. The rooms are charming, if a bit faded and the breakfast has great muffins! Most of all the price is right in a city where an attractive hotel around $100 is a chimera.
