During my first extented trip to San Francisco my wife and I stayed at the Nob Hill Lambourne. It is a small hotel (20 rooms) located in a relatively quiet part of the city. We were within a short walk of Powell St. and the Cable Cars. A little further walk and we were in Chinatown, or Union Square (depending on what direction we went). The breakfasts were simple and satisifying. In the evening there was wine and cheese. The rooms were clean and nicely decorated in muted colors. The beds were very comfortable, hand sewn matresses and fine linens. The staff was very helpful and had a number of travel guides for us to read through. There are spa sevices such as massages available. Our room also had a kitchenette in case you want to eat in, but its San Francisco who'd want to eat in? This is a non smoking hotel.

Comfortble beds, good breakfast, classy decor, very clean rooms and a helpful staff.
