San Francisco Gem of a Hotel

For my daughter's high school graduation present, we gave her and her boyfriend an all-expense paid trip to San Francisco. Her words about the Red Victorian:

This hotel is a fantastic place to call home while visiting San Francisco. Located in the famous Haight-Ashbury district, and run by the inimitable Sami Sunchild, this cozy little place is clean, charming, and full of personality. Comfy beds and imaginative decor are just the icing on the cake. We love this place and will stay there again on our next visit to San Francisco.

Unique Quality: The Red Victorian is nothing if not unique. You'll find interesting people, really fun decor, and a positive energy that will blow you away. It's really close to Golden Gate Park which we had a great time exploring.

Something Different in San Francisco

I stayed here in June 2005 and thought it was really amazing. It's a quaint little B&B where each room is done up in a different style all kind of related to the 1960's/hippies generally. And I don't mean dodgy decor...I stayed in the Butterfly Room, pretty in blue, with giant butterflies hanging from the ceiling. I don't think any of the rooms have an ensuite bathroom but all the bathrooms were very clean and had no qualms about sharing them.

Breakfast which is a muffins and bagels type affair can be accompanied by a lively discussion from the owner Sami Sunchild. You can choose to get involved or not but it's certainly a different way to start your morning.

It's also in a great area - there are some excellent shops (clothes and food) up and down the street and a great Cuban/fusion restaurant, i have forgotten the name but litereally if you come out of the B&B and turn left and keep walking, it's about 3 blocks down, and painted in bright colours - amazing food.

Great option in Haight

I've stayed here a couple of times and it's very handy, well run and pleasant - if a little jarring in its 60s sensibility after a long haul flight!

Unique Quality: Individual rooms have themes - Japanese Tea Garden, Summer of Love, etc. The world's problems are solved over the breakfast.

A Blast from the Past

I haven't stayed here but I know this B & B by reputation, as well as the general neighborhood (Haight-Ashbury) and I can strongly recommend it to anyone who is visiting S.F. for the first time. It seems to be ideal for the free-minded and independent traveller, and is well-connected to the downtown area by public transportation, so you don't absolutely need a car here.

Bed & Breakfast

Located on Haight near Golden Gate park. It is a very nice, relaxing place to stay and meet new people. Each room has a theme, with a shared bathroom on each level.

Unique Quality: There is one warning though: you may get an "interesting" feature in your room depending on the theme.

Bed, breakfast, & art!

UNIQUE!!
Each one has a different theme: sunshine room, flowerchild room, japanese tea garden room, etc.
And they are all decorated according to their name. Also the bathrooms have a different theme!

Unique Quality: Very hippy.

Districts. Acommodation

by emalendur

Hello!

4 of us (2 couples) will visit San Francisco in the beginning of July. It's kinda hard to choose the best area for accommodation... As the budget is pretty tight (max 40-50$ per double room) and we are not interested only in the tourist areas.

What could be an exciting district with friendly and freethinking atmosphere? Something more off the beaten track but with good connections with other parts of the city.

Maybe you can even suggest a concrete hotel/guesthouse!
Thanks a lot!

Try the Red Victorian on Height St. in the middle of Height-Ashbury. You could not get any more "freethinking" than this place. It is owned and run by two Hippy artist who have been there since the summer of love. You can hop a bus from there that connect to anywhere you want to go. Max

SF is an expensive city -- double rooms for $40-50 will be hard to find.

The Taylor Hotel is offering an Internet special in that range. I don't have any personal knowledge about this hotel, but you can check it out:

You can also try:

Quikbook - www.quikbook.com

San Francisco Convention & Visitors Bureau -

Roxie is right, SF is very expensive.

Union Square would be the best area, but it will be hard finding a room for $40-50.

Try going to www.priceline.com
You should be able to get a 2 star for $40-50.
However, they make you put your details and do not list other countries, so you might want to e-mail them or call them.

Hope this helps
