by gracebarrett

I'm hoping to spend 9 - 10 nights in san francisco in September can anyone recommend a cheap hotel in union square area which is reasonable, clean and safe?
Hostel would be fine too. Has anyone stayed at USA Hostels San Francisco on Taylor St or Green Tortoise or HI san Francisco-city center?
Not sure whether to go for cheap hotel or hostel
Mnay thanks,

What is cheap in San Fran for you? Recently I went to Priceline.com as asked for the Union Sqaure area for a 3 star hotel for $60/night. I got the Downtown Marriot which is right off Market and an easy walk to Union Square. It's a great hotel with a jazz club on the top floor with views of the city all around. This was on a weekend as well. It also had a good gym and pool.
Good luck.

Not far from Union square, I staid last year in the Grant Plazza Hotel in Chinatown...I paid 49$/night but it is possible to get it cheaper...
If interested you can find more info and pictures from my SF page (check the travelogue).

Union Square Plaza is not bad for slightly more $59 (rack) rate. Only a block and half from Union Square.

ALCATRAZ ISLAND & STATE PENITENTUARY
This is the most popular visitor attraction within the city. Once the world renowned and notorious prison known to all as the Rock. Thought to be inescapable – in fact although attempts have been made it is unknown if those actually made it to the free world or drown in the bay.
To get to Alcatraz l had to pre book tickets – it really is that popular an attraction. To do so go to www.blueandgoldfleet.com – this is the only tour company running scheduled ferries from Fisherman’s Wharf to the Island. Our tour cost $16 each and this included an audio tour of the cell house. I would recommend this great tour. You follow the lines of your feet and listen to former prisoners and wardens talk about “The Rock”. There are also trips out of town – we took a wine country tour – with Tower Towers (www.towertours.com) out to Napa Valley and Sonoma Valleys. We visited 3 wineries – Madonna, Viansam and Cline – none which l had heard off – but l drank and tasted the wines. Lunch was in the town of Sonoma – this is somewhere l would like to visit for longer than an hour – its very picturesque – craft and antique shops, wine shops selling the local produce and lovely restaurants.
Free City Walking Tours

The SF public library offers free walking tours all year long at all the major attractions and neighborhoods in the city. Check out http://www.sfcityguides.org/
and then click on schedule.
Tours are about 2 hours and absolutely free. They ask for a donation at the end of the tour. Guides are knowledgeable and personable. There are 6-10 tours offered daily throughout the city and several going on at the same time.
Loads of tour options to choose from. I've taken the Nob Hill tour and the Golden Gate Bridge tour.
Both were excellent.
Cable Car

The fare (for one direction) is $2. Exact change is preferred, but operators will make change. There are self-service ticket machines (which do make change) at a few major stops and at all the terminals. The one exception is the busy cable car terminal at Powell and Market streets; purchase tickets at the kiosk there.

Our last visit included a visit to Pebble Beach. I played Pebble Beach and Spyglass. This was like a trip to heaven! I sang on stage with the Fabulous Pelicans at the Ritz in San Francisco. It was a blast.

This is a picture of the Golden Gate taken from the Marin Highlands in March 2001. Everyone seems to get a pic like this. I think the fog rolling in is one of those things you just don't get until you experience it.
