There is not much you can say about this hotel that is not positive. I stayed on the 30th floor and had a beautiful view of the Golden Gate Bridge, which is absolutely gorgeous in the evening. Top that off with a stunning view of downtown while taking the open view elevator on the way down, and you have the makings of a great hotel. Top that off with a Heavenly Bed! Voila, instant comfort.
I watched the history of the St. Francis on the television, which was exciting as well. During WWII, Admiral Nimitz worked here to develop the plan for the Pacific Battle. Douglas McArthur stayed here after the war was over... It was the initial meeting place for the UN, Ronald Reagan and Queen Elizabeth met here, and Gerald Ford was shot at just outside of this hotel.
The Westin St. Francis has been a San Francisco landmark since 1904 and the saty was fantastic as it is located right on Union Square where all the main shops are!
Of the Fairmont, Mark Hopkins, Ritz, any 4 or 5 star hotel this is the best because of its exciting central location. Cable Car right outside the door. In Union Square.
Unique Quality: Lobby, building, location all make this the best choice.
Directions: Union Square
This hotel is amazing. We stayed here just a week before Christmas and were treated with total respect. From the first step in the door, everything is in perfect order. The staff is professional, the guests are dressed in their finest clothes and the excitement of the season is in the air.
Unique Quality: One of our rooms did not have a view, but instead had a outdoor patio so we could enjoy the clear December skies. The other room in our group had a great view of the city square, including the fabulous holiday tree. Another great feature of the hotel was the Oak Room, the restaurant, just off the loby. We enjoyed a set menu for our group and I had the Beef Tenderloin. While the steak came out a bit under cooked, they took it back and fixed it within minutes, without question. For dessert we had creme brule and headed out to the symphony. The entire time we were at the restaurant the staff was aware of our time constraints and worked to have us out the door on time. When it was time to check out, our car was brought to us quickly, though there were many people who were also leaving at the same time.
Luxurious, expensive and fancy. Kings and Queens have stayed here for gods sake. In Union Square.
Unique Quality: Historic building, good location, famous.
Directions: Union Square
Bear in mind that I stayed there back in 1954. The location, however, hasn't changed and it is right on Union Square.
The photo is from a post card sent to me by a friend.

The Westin St. Francis Hotel
IS SOME ROOMS IN THE WESTIN ST FRANCIS BETTER THAN OTHERS? WHAT SI THE HOTELS GOOD POINTS? THANKS
The hotel has an old building and a newer tower. The tower is like any modern hotel room. The old building has different floorplans and higher ceilings. If you can get a Union Square view room in the old building at least the 5th floor or higher you would like it.
If you take the old building, stay away from the front rooms as you will have a beautiful view, but the noise from Powell street will not be nice, especially the cable cars clanging the bell late at night. The older part of the hotel will definately have more character.
