Pleasantly surprised
The Canterbury was truly a pleasant surprise. Located in Sutter St, it's is in a reasonable location, with plenty of restaurants nearby. The building itself has seen better days. However don't let appearances fool you.
Stepping into the lobby you are greeted like an old friend by the reception staff. The place has a Camelot feel to it with suits of armour adorning the lobby - it could do with a little more light though.
The rooms are very spacious - enormous compared to most other hotel rooms in the USA. Again the rooms are a little dark for my taste, but they do certainly fit the hotel theme.
Health club is modern and well maintained - probably one of the better hotel gyms I've had the pleasure of using.
The in-house restaurant doubles as a bar serving standard hotel restaurant fare - nothing to write home to your mother about, but it probably won't kill you either.
The service here is fantastic. This is the only hotel I've been to where the reception desk has taken me through my itemised account without my asking at checkout - very attentive - bravo. The concierge seems to know the area very well - and when he makes a recommendation you can feel very confident in accepting it. All in all, a great little place to stay - a little too dark for a business traveller (can't see well enough to get anything done), with some of the best service I've experienced.

Great hotel
I've stayed at the Canterbury twice now. Once in 1999 and again in 2003. I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.
I thought I'd been lucky getting a huge room the first time but got an equally sized one on my second visit.
The location is great. About 2mins walk to Union Square and 20mins to Fishermans Wharf.
Unique Quality: Try a pint or two of "Eye of the Hawk" from the attached "StreetSide Bar".
