Boutique Hotel with a Touch of Class & History

York hotel is a charming European-style boutique hotel right in the heart of the action (Union Square). It is definitely unlike any typical hotel in that it has a lot of character and charm in a warm/intimate & cozy atmosphere.

I knew about this hotel because I'm a fan of Alfred Hitchcock and some scenes in one of his films (my favorite since childhood) called "Vertigo" was filmed there. It is also a hotel that has historical significance in that it was a "speakeasy" during Prohibition in the 1920s and a celebrated hang-out for famous socialites, rich flappers, etc. back then. They have a famous Lounge that remains actively used to this day.

All this history, charm, wonderful location around Union Square, amenities, and great service is worth every penny. I remember that the price used to be in the higher price range ($140-$170) for a regular room, but I'm not sure now. Although it seems like they've recently renovated, I checked on-line and the prices appear to be within mid-range. They also seem to have special packages available. Check this hotel out:

I called them and the personnel at the front desk indicated that there is an extra charge for parking. For self-parking, prepare to pay an extra $25. It sounds reasonable enough to me.

Enjoy this little gem in the heart of San Francisco!

Unique Quality: The historical background, the location (it's close to everything), the service, and amenities. It is quite a charming boutique hotel!

Walking distance to Union Square

The York Hotel is located just a few short blocks away from Union Square. The staff was nice enough though I didn't really need to ask for anything. The complimentary breakfast in the morning was good and they changed the selection every day that i stayed there. The room was clean and pretty good sized and it had a HUGE walk-in closet. I'd recommend this hotel to anyone that doesn't want to pay a lot of money to stay right on Powell St.

Quiet Hotel

I got off the Powell St. BART and walk a few blocks to find my hotel, The York Hotel. It wasn't the luxury, overpriced hotels in every big city. It was a great find in a great location. The rooms were on the small side, but if you've traveled many cities have small rooms. Plus I was a single traveler so it didn't bother me at all. The hotel also had a breakfast in the morning, small continental breakfast. Just take a few muffins and croissants in your bag and it makes for a great snack in the park.

Vertigo

The famous Vertigo Room - we didn't get to stay in it but I'm guessing it's not much different than the others, however it would be very cool.....

Vertigo

The York is an older hotel within walking distance of Union Square, Chinatown, Little Itlay, North Beach and Fishermans Wharf. Bus Service to Haight is close by. The staff are friendly and cute!! All were really cute young men which really worked for me!

Unique Quality: This hotel is where Hitchcock filmed the movie vertigo - and if that weren't cool enough, apparently there is passage ways that run underground from the days of prohibition. The Empire Plush room is a great place for a drink and right down the street are some great places to sip the day away over coffee/beer and people watch.

Excellent location, rooms & entertainment!!

The York Hotel is a charming, comfortable place located on Nob Hill, a short walk from Union Square. The rooms are lovely, & the service is very good. They will make restaurant reservations and get theatre tickets, etc.

I haven't stayed at the York , but a friend of mine did and thoroughly enjoyed it. I've been to the York several times & like the comfortable ambiance - small and nicely elegant.

Also, you can catch a show in the Empire Plush Room, a cabaret-style showroom and bar.

Great location, price and service

I would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting San Francisco and not only because it was featured in Alfred Hitchcock's classic suspense film "Vertigo" and not because it has a Cabaret bar downstairs that was a famous speakeasy during Prohibition.

Unique Quality: The beds were comfortable and the room was simple and clean. There was a nice walk-in closet, a coffemaker and contrary to what my Rough Guide said, the staff was extremely friendly. In fact, I told the guys at the front desk that I was expecting them to be jerks because the Rough Guide described the staff as a bit snooty. They just laughed and explained the the ownership had changed in the last six months and that the staff was all new.

More about York Hotel

Surprised a little at area

by TripAdvisor Member Merewoodman

The hotel was that used in an Alfred Hitchcock film. The staff were very efficient and helpful. The rooms were more than adequate and clean but when we walked down the street to eat I had never expected to see so many vagrants. They did not trouble us mind you but gave the area a very run down appearance. Parking was handy and not too expensive and all arranged by reception. With the supurb transport system here we never used the car again whilst in SF. It was 4th July and the bar was shut for staff holiday? Can this be so on a holiday? Otherwise good and had we turned left as we exited we would probably have gone to a more salubrious area of the city. We will go back there

Great for a large group in town for a wedding

by TripAdvisor Member comfortplus

Stayed three nights at the York Hotel for a family wedding. We were a large group (30+) but the hotel's spacious & elegant lobby and inviting bar area made convening and planning daily activities a snap. Hotel is walking distance from many eating/shopping/sight-seeing destinations, and cabs/public transportation are available for city trips further out. Rooms were basic, a bit worn and shabby but also clean; I was told by the front desk that they will be refurbishing them later in the year. In addition to its central location, I absolutely recommend the York for its helpful and courteous staff & concierge---they were young and energetic and genuinely wanted to help us have a great stay---which we most certainly did! Definitely after the upcoming room renovations, this hotel will meet all your lodging needs for this fabulous city at a good value.

A Real San Francisco Experience

by TripAdvisor Member ashstevec

Loved this hotel. Obviously it's not 5-star, but the rates are good ($320 for 3 nights twin room in August), the rooms clean, the staff friendly and the location great. The place has character, with it's slightly faded grandeur, Hitchcock connections, cool bar and Empire Plush Room. It's a great place to begin a days sight-seeing, especially if you like exploring on foot (the best way to see this city). Only a short walk away from Union Square, Nob Hill, Chinatown, Japantown, The Fillmore, Little Italy, and no more than a $10 taxi ride from North Bay, Marina, Haight Ashbury.
OK, so the walls are a little thin and the breakfast basic, but there are great places to eat nearby.
Highly recommended unless you prefer a sanitized chain hotel that's the same as the one in your own town.
