What is the best?

by Dury

Which way is better to get from Los Angeles to San Jose? Is there a train and how much it is? Is there a cheap rental car place from LA to SJ (rent in LA and return in SJ)?

Check www.amtrak.com for the Coast Starlight route. If you want to see some country that would be my pick.

the drive is long and boring (through I-5)...I would recommend taking a cheap flight for less than $100

Amtrak's northbound Pacific Surfliner trains end at San Luis Obispo. From there, Amtrak has a bus going to San Francisco that stops at San Jose. Use the travel planner at www.amtrak.com to get an itinerary which includes fare and schedule.

The Coast Starlight is a train the entire way.

Travel Tips for San Jose

Plaza De Cesar Chavez Park

by rmiya84778

Ever summer starting in July, live music or concerts are held every Thursday evening begining at 5:00 PM. I pass through this park ever day on my way to work so has special meaning to me. This park is surrounded by Fairmont Hotel, Knight Ridder building, San Jose Museum of Art, Montgomery Theatre, Civic Auditorium, Tech Discovery Museum and high rise buildings.
Meeting point for sight seeing in San Jose. Nearby and very convient is VTA train. On most days that are very hot in San Jose, the water fountains in the center of the park are turned on so you get cooled off. (kids love this)

Moffett Field -- NASA's Ames Research Center

by Ewingjr98

Just 15 miles from downtown San Jose is NASA's Ames Research Center located in Mountain View (home of Google, Mozilla, AOL, and Sun Microsystems). NASA Ames was founded in 1939 and its partnerships in Silicon Valley have allowed it to experiment with high tech applications such as machine learning and artificial intelligence. NASA Ames is home to the world's largest wind tunnel.

Ames Research Center occupies Moffett Field, a former US Navy and US Army installation. The Navy began operations here in 1933, then the Army Air Corps took over operations from 1935 to 1941. During World War II, the Navy resumed operations at Moffett, including antisubmarine warfare operations. In 1994 Naval Air Station Moffett Field was closed and the entire facility turned over to NASA.

Adjacent to Moffett Field is Onizuka Air Force Station which was recommended for closure in the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Committee.

NASA Ames is located just of Highway 101 and parts of the facility are open to the public.

SJSU Olympic Monument

by Ewingjr98

One of the more unique monuments in San Jose is the Olympic Monument at San Jose State University. This is a statue of the controversial moment at the 1968 Mexico Olympics when two American athletes chose to use the podium as a platform for a political statement. The athletes, Tommie Smith and John Carlos, had both studied at San Jose State. They had just finished first and third in the 200 meter run and wore black gloves and raised their fists in protest of civil rights and racial injustice in America. The protest was frowned upon by the IOC because the Olympics have historically been a time when political differences were set aside in favor of international unity, and the athletes were suspended from the games. Some have praised their acts as bravery while others said the athletes disgraced America on an international stage.

The monument was just unveiled in 2007 and is located on the SJSU campus beside Tower Hall.

"European" Shopping District

by nomadig about Santana Row

Santana Row is newly developed shopping and dining area in San Jose. It is claimed to be an European styled district with a lot of cafés, restaurants, boutiques and decent pavements to walk on.

In some sense, the place has gained sort of poshy European appeal. On the other hand, the district is mere one street with three blocks of stores, so the European style vanishes fast when you go beyond those blocks. You see a lot of parking lots and small buildings.

The stores and restaurants themselves are really worth of visits. There are several top-notch stores, such as Gucci and Burberry, but you can find also mid-priced shops.

Breakfast is their specialty!

by Shooting4TheStars about Holder's Country Inn

Friendly Staff, comfortable surroundings, overall, just great! Family friendly! Breakfast is their specialty but they serve lunch and dinner as well. Homestyle cooking, it's a big favorite with the locals! It's all good! I love their waffles with strawberries!
