Whats the best way to travel

by dawnelle27

I may be heading to san francisco in August and would like to check out the Winchester house in San Jose. How long is the commute and what is the best way of transportation. I am from San Antonio and not familiar with other forms of transportation besides a bus--thanks

Let me ask the FIRST question

by PR-7

Why exactly are you planning to visit this house? It's big, yes, and its construction is often haphazard; but, other than that, there's no particular reason to visit it. The story, that Ms. Winchester continued to build the house due to fears of being haunted, is false -- even the guides admit that. The biggest mystery I can find after making my visit is why anyone would go to the expense and trouble of visiting something that's no more than a large Victorian-style house.

If you do decide to go here, this link should give you options for mass transit for getting to the San Jose area

and this one for getting around once you're there:

Hey! It's about a 45 minute drive from San Francisco. Renting a car would be the best and easiest method.

It is worth seeing, once! While, I haven't used it the Cal Train runs a commute line up and down the area. www.caltrain.org might give you more information. Plus, it would be a great way to see some of the area without fighting the traffic. Also check http://supersightseeing.com/ for a bus tour they do from SF to the house and other locations in the area.

Travel Tips for San Jose

Bouldering at Touchstone

by Anthro

This indoor bouldering rock wall is centrally located between 1st and 2nd Streets in downtown San Jose. The cost is $10 per adult/ $5 per kid. It is a day pass, so you can climb for however long you want. The wall is challenging with marked "puzzles" or paths, however you can climb however you want if you do not want to follow the designated rock grips. There were no ropes, but the kids (when I was there) were doing a great job, even getting to the top of the 15-20 foot wall. Unless you have the rock climbing shoes already, you need to rent their shoes for $4 a pair. Bring your own rock climbing shoes or you can rent theirs for $4. They stink like bowling shoes though!

Bring comfortable clothing and some quarters for their lockers in case you bring extra stuff. Or, you can just place it on the side near the pads.

Mt Lick

by pmarshuk

You can't really tell from this picture but the approach road is very steep and twisting. Lots of people actually think it's fun to cycle to this place judging by the number of cyclists we saw on the road.

Everything for your home

by nomadig about Crate & Barrel

Crate & Barrel is a good place to buy mid-priced furniture and small items to your home. The stuff is not top-notch design, but they are not made from the cardboard, either.

If you are travelling, you may not be able to buy a sofa and squeeze it to your suitcase, but the store is still worth a visit. The selection of vases and other smaller items is almost exhaustive and the prices are not bad.

Crate & Barrel stocks also Marimekko fabrics, so if you are fancy of Finnish design, go and check their offerings.

Go Greyhound

by cwest03

Greyhound is another viable option for getting to and from San Jose. Although I've never taken it myself I do know that there is a station in downtown San Jose located at 70 South Almaden Ave. From there Greyhound will take you all over the Bay Area, California and the country.

Telephone Numbers:
Main: (408) 295-4151
Baggage: (408) 295-6939
Greyhound Package Express: (408) 295-8276
Customer Service: (408) 295-4153
Charter: (800) 454-2487
