Affordable ideas(?) for San Jose to San Francisco commute

by blahname

Anyone commute or has ever had to commute from San Jose to San Francisco? I was recently promoted and relocated to San Francisco, but I really don’t want to move away from San Jose. I like it here, but the commute is too expensive. Gas is too much, and I have no idea how the train works. Err; I need all the advice I can get.

You're in luck. Caltrain gets you to SF.

http://www.caltrain.com/

If the SF station isn't close enough to work, you can hop on the Muni.

http://www.sfmuni.com/

I think you can get free transfers onto Muni when you ride Caltrain. Most public transportation providers in the area do that. Don't drive in. Too long and too expensive. Bay Area has great public transit.

Welcome to the area (and congras on the promotion!!)

You might also be able to hook up with a carpool or rideshare by signing up here: www.511.org.

Depending on which part of SJ you live in and which part of SF you work in you might also consider bus or drive to Fremont BART.

Hey guys..

If I am arriving at SFO Airport and what is the "cheapest" way of getting into San Jose Convention Centre? The train?!

Thanks!!!

Travel Tips for San Jose

Christmas in the Park

by Shaft28

In downtown at Plaza de Cesar Chavez Park San Jose unleashed the evil in time for Christmas.
Fondly named Christmas in the park, the city puts on display "booths" of automated holiday characters moving back and forth completely out of tune with the music in the background.
Once a quaint tradition from 1950, the booths have yet to be updates. Meanwhile thousands of locals clammor to view these crappy displays. Traffic is horrendous and the crowd overflows into the street.
All the while you wonder- why. This so sucks. Why are people forcing their children here.
Ah, that is the fun. Get a large group of friends. Drink heavily.
Go to Xmas in the park. Slyly make comments about how the automated elves are going to come alive and kill us. But not for the kids to hear.
I know, I'm evil, but it is fun if you are forced into this December activity.

Go for a beautiful hike

by trvlrtom

While the orchards of Silicon Valley are now gone, it is surprisingly easy to find off the beaten track hiking and walking trails. There are good regional, county and state parks nearby that have some of the best scenery California has to offer. No kidding. There are redwood groves, waterfall trails, high peaks and rolling hills covered with wildflowers in the spring. Summer can get hot, so you might want to focus on the forested Santa Cruz mountains during that season. But in winter and spring the hillsides are beautiful.
Some neary favorites:
Almaden Quicksilver - several trailheads lead to hikes into the hills, covered with native oaks, madrones etc. There are historical markers from the mining ites: www.geocities.com/almadenqs
Mission Peak - Part of the wonderful East Bay Regional Park system, from here there are fab views of the whole area. www.ebparks.org/parks/mission
Uvas Canyon - probably the best place to see waterfalls. www.sccgov.org/portal/site/parks/parksarticle?contentId=c1128a77d9784010VgnVCMP230004adc4a92____
Castle Rock State Park - Just minutes away from the heart of Silicon Valley are miles and miles of wilderness trails. www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=538

Japan Town

by cwest03

Japan town is a small 3 block strip of shops and restaurants in San Jose found on Jackson Street near 4th. If you like Japanese food it worth the trip as there are plenty of choices. San Jose's Japan town is one of the few remaining Japan Towns left in the US.

Happy Shoes

by nomadig about Camper

Camper is a Spanish brand that sells very positive looking shoes. You just cannot be unhappy while having Camper shoes on -- unless they are of wrong size.

The Camper store is located near the middle of Santana Row area. The smallish shop provides the whole selection of Camper shoes. The shoes are laid out in a table in the middle and thus the cramped feeling of cheaper shoestores is avoided.

The shoes are not the cheapest, but you pay for quality and Spanish design.

Stay away from the Fish & Chips

by jhm1130 about Britannia Arms

Britannia Arms was where I'd go for Fish & Chips. However, they've decreased the size of the portions and changed the type of oil use for deep frying (Yuk!).

I'll never go there again and definitely do not recommend it! None!
