Accommodation near San Jose State Uni?

by ZenLady34

hi all,

I'm looking for a good (read:safe, clean, near Uni, max price per night 90USD)
accommodation in San Jose. Would you have any suggestions as Ramada near the Uni and Fairmont hotel are already fully booked? Any sites that you have found usefull when looking for an accommodation in here? Which areas have good access to the Uni in San Jose?

Most importantly, would it be possible to come on daily basis to the uni from San Francisco and if so, which hotel would you recommend in there?
Target days are in OCT 2010.

Thanks for your replies. Even renting a car would be possible if the accommodation would be a very good value. Any ideas?

SJSU is right by Downtown San Jose, so any of the hotels in Downtown San Jose would be a short walk to campus. Downtown San Jose is a pretty nice area to stay in.
It's, of course, possible to commute between San Francisco and San Jose, but it's a long drive. You can take CalTrain also, but it's $25 one-way and takes 1.5 hours.
If your main focus while there is to see San Jose State, you should probably stay down there. Once down there, if you have time and want to, you can take the train up to San Francisco one day.

You may want to check the SJSU site for student, or visitor housing at http://housing.sjsu.edu/0_student_resources.html. Also trasportation options are varied and described at http://www.sjsu.edu/about_sjsu/visiting/campus_maps/directions/ .

If time is a factor, staying near the campus would be best. Anywhere on the SJ light rail system would be easiest as even though thousands of people commute from SF and elsewhere in the East Bay daily, it is a long commute.

Also the general SJ Visitor's Guide http://www.sjsu.edu/about_sjsu/visiting/local_links/index.htm may provide some additonal places to visit.

To visit SF, I'd use Cal Train to Milbrae and then BART to downtown SF as the train station in SF is a number of blocks from "down town." It's quite walkable, but BART is more central.

Thanks for your replies. I did not realize that commuting from SF takes so long.
I will chk out the uni's pages asap. Is it possible to park for around Uni, just thinking if need to take the accommodation further from downtown *lifting shoulders*

Honestly, SJSU is not a really car-friendly campus. Parking is really strict and there aren't many spots available. They also enforce everything (including the permit parking) 24/7/365, which should say something right there. If you don't stay down there, you may want to use one of the park & ride lots and ride the VTA light rail in, depending on how many people you have with you, just because it would be easier.
http://www.vta.org/services/park_ride.html

That link (http://www.sjsu.edu/about_sjsu/visiting/campus_maps/directions/) has visitor parking info on the bottom of the page. You have to be really careful where you park around there so as to not get a ticket. You can also park at one of the Downtown garages and walk there.

Biking Up Mt. Hamilton

by Anthro

On a recent trip up to the Lick Observatory (Mt. Hamilton Road/130), I saw numerous cyclists trekking up the 24 mile road up to the top of the 4,000' elevation mountain. At a 7% grade, Mt. Hamilton Rd. twists and turns with numerous switchbacks and hairpin turns...perfect for serious cyclists. Once you reach the top, there is a great view of the Mt. Diablo Mountain range and the valley.

Be sure to bring plenty of water & food since there are no services throughout the journey. bike, pump, helmet, water & whatever else you would use.

San Jose Flea Market

by Shaft28

On Wednesday - Sunday, dusk to dawn you can go to one of Northern California's largest flea markets.
While this may not be your cup of tea, it is a haven for others (not me).
Huge area, think well over 30 acres of permanent vendors and new ones as well.
Included produce row, playgrounds, carosel and I thinkt he go-carts are still going.
Fun day for the bargin hunter, torture for others.
Believe travel channel voted this in the top ten FM in the world! An dto think I used to buy firecrackers here as a kid.

San Jose has an International...

by alohabrendon

San Jose has an International Airport, but I think it only serves Mexico and Canada. But, it serves most major US cities.
San Jose is spread out,if you plan to get out of the downtown area, a car would be best.
