Travel Tips for San Luis Obispo
Thursday Nights = Farmers' Market downtown
by Nor_Cal_Brad
This takes place every Thursday from 6 pm to 9 pm (except Thanksgiving or if it's raining) in downtown SLO on Higuera St between Osos St and Nipomo St. Farmers' Market is a big attraction in San Luis Obispo and I highly recommend checking it out if you're in town on a Thursday evening. Higuera Street is closed to traffic and farmers and restaurants set up temporary stands out on the curb. There is often live music and other random activities besides the food vendors and booths from various interest groups trying to get you to sign up for stuff. People can get many different types of prepared food - tri tip (steak) sandwiches, tacos, ribs, gyros, etc... as well as fresh vegetables. It can be quite crowded, especially on a warm evening or during WOW (Week of Welcome) week in mid September. Most people tend to walk slowly or just stand around in the street, so if you are trying to avoid some of the pedestrian traffic, try using the sidewalk for a less crowded walkway. It's always FREE to go to Farmers' Market
James Dean
by Ewingjr98
OK, so it's a long way off the beaten path from SLO to Cholame, CA. A total of 50 miles: some 16 miles via 101 to Altascadero then 34 miles on Route 41 to the intersection with Route 46. This intersection is known as James Dean Memorial Intersection and the the location where James Dean was killed in a car accident.
James Dean was just 24 when he died, after starring in only three movies: Rebel Without a Cause, Steinbeck's East of Eden, and Giant. He then started a brief racing career. While traveling from LA to Salinas for a race, he was killed at this unusual y-shaped intersection by a driver who cut in front of him while attempting to turn left, resulting in a head-on collision.
Head to Santa Barbara County
by meteorologist1
From San Luis Obispo, it's easy to get to beautiful Santa Barbara County. Consider heading a little more south along U.S. Highway 101 to the city of Santa Barbara to see another excellent mission and to shop and spend the evening on festive State Street. Also consider heading to Solvang, an excellent town with a Danish influence, where you can shop for Danish products and eat Danish food.
JAMBALAYA, CRAWFISH PIE AND FILE GUMBO
by travelgourmet about BON TEMPS CREOLE CAFE
Capturing the essence of Mardi Gras, Bon Temps Creole Cafe has all the foods of Cajun country. Not that much to look at, sort of a roadside cafe feel, but there is everything from red beans and rice to gumbo ya ya. Bon Temps serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, opening at 7 am till 9 pm closing.
The ambiance is casual and friendly and helpful staff to make sure you are happy. Mardi Gras beads are scattered about and the colors of Mardi Gras shine on the glitter streamers on the walls. The night that my wife and I were there, a father and son duo gave us some good times songs and great guitar picking to liven things up. I ordered the seafood gumbo and it was s-p-i-c-y. Lots of seafood portions in the dish but I would have preferred a thicker gumbo. My wife had the shrimp & andouille pasta jambalaya which she said was great. I was able to sample this dish and it should have been my choice. Yummy. All in all, if you are looking for that New Orleans taste, go to Bon Temps.
Tasty Mediterranean Cuisine
by Nor_Cal_Brad about Jaffa Cafe
Jaffa Cafe offers many tasty varieties of wraps, gyros, kabobs, etc... with choices of chicken, lamb, or vegetarian. There is a big menu behind the counter, and the drinks are over to the right behind the glass doors. Good amount of seating available, with a few TVs against the wall (I've seen football and soccer on when I've been there). The owners are very friendly (they are often there) and every dish I've sampled has been great. The last time I was there they gave us complimentary baklava (highly recommended) along with overall great food and service. My favorite is the plate of lamb shawarma - you get about twice as much meat if you get the plate as opposed to the wrap. Very tasty meat, seasoned well, served with hummos and homemade pita bread. I've only tried about 4 dishes here, but they were all very good.
