Travel Tips for San Luis Obispo

Hispanic in name only

by Karnubawax

While the founders of many towns around San Luis Obispo were Spanish speakers, the later settlers were decidedly not. Thus you will find that the pronunciation of many landmarks has been thoroughly Anglicanized. For example...

San Luis Obispo = Lewis, NOT San Louie

Paso Robles = Robuls, NOT Roblays

Arroyo Grande = Grandy, NOT Granday

There are countless other examples - you will sometimes even hear Los Angeles prounced with a hard G.

tired of all those bakos and fresniods?

by peewee12tree

instead of hitting the usual beaches here are some that most tourists don't know about. in shell beach.

get off the freeway at "mattie road" and then turn right.
at the pelican point hotel, park and walk down the path on your right. follow the steps down to the beach. be careful!

avila traffic got you down?

by peewee12tree

the bob jones bike trail offers beautiful scenery and the chance to see some wildlife as well.

get off the freeway at the "port san luis" exit. keep going straight until you reach a dead end. turn right and follow the windy road until you reach avila beach. watch for the crosswalk as you will be parking before you reach it. turn left and park on the dirt or on the street. cross the crosswalk and you will see a sign that reads "bob jones bike trail".

The only REAL barbecue on the Central Coast

by DickCMason about J. D. Boone's Smokehouse

Big Mama produces the only REAL barbecue I've been able to find since I moved to the Central Coast. It's oak smoked (not mesquite), but it's still pretty good, especially considering what passes for barbecue in this area. The service is generally good, especially if you go early in the week and tip well (thursday, friday and saturday they get swamped at dinner, so they're likely to run out of food, and they'll be rushed to help everyone that's their). I like the pulled pork. It's beautiful, tender and delicious with coleslaw on top and South Carolina Sauce.

good thai, but meager portions

by DoroTheExplorer about Royal Thai

Given the size of this town, there are a lot of Thai restaurants. Most of my friends and I prefer Royal Thai. The food is very very good. I like most everything I have tried from the menu. They have several different grades of spiciness for the picky eaters. There is one level that I don?t think is on the menu which is "Thai hot"--the spiciest, of course. The restaurant is very clean and often quiet. Service is prompt and polite.

My only complaint is that portion size seems rather small compared with what you can get at other restaurants, Thai or not. The bill is also a bit high (for a college-student budget) for the portion size. However, in my opinion, the flavorsome taste of the food merits sporadic visits. I wish I could remember what my favorite dish is called. I think it is Garlic Beef or Lemongrass Beef. Ask the waiter. It's definitely "Something" Beef and it is a very frequently ordered dish from the specials part of the menu. The waiter should know what you are talking about.
