Butting up against my town
Other than the parts of San Mateo that are on the West side of US Highway 101, it can be a little hard to tell where San Mateo ends and Foster City starts. But since it's so close, and it's often where we eat, I am adding a San Mateo page to my VT pages.
It's a very livable town with an interesting old downtown area comprising several antique shops, some rather nice one-of restaurants, movie theaters, and a Draeger Supermarket, which is about as top of the line as supermarkets can get. (How many markets have an entire aisle of balsamic vinegars?
And of course the town explands to include the necessary Mall (Hillsdale) and the thoroughfare with all the tire stores and futon shops.
The county fair grounds are in San Mateo as well as a horse race track. There's a community college on the hill.
On the East side of US 101, north of Highway 92 there is another shopping mall, a few more restaurants, some hightech and industrial buildings, a golf course, and one of the best bike paths around. The path goes from the edge of Foster City all the way to San Francisco International Airport.
