Los Angeles Cruise Terminal
by mothersanddaughters
Cruising on RC cruise in January 2008. Flying into LAX airport. Thinking
about staying at The Doubletree Hotel since they have a shuttle to the Cruise
Terminal. What is the Long Beach/San Pedro area like. We will rent a car
from LAX, so is it very far from attractions? Thanks

san pedro is a very nice place where you have nice views of the pacific and in just a few minutes you can drive to palo verde hills if you want to get out in nature.
long beach has a nice beach front and good nightlife, especially around pine avenue.
long beach has some pretty bad parts of town too, but they are easily avoided.

If you do stay near San Pedro, there's a wonderful Greek restaurant there that I've gone to for years whenever I'm out there visiting. The waiters sing, dance .. plus the food is delicious. It's called Papadakis and would beat any food at the Doubletree. The area in Long Beach near the marina and downtown hotels is quite nice. As mentioned, some parts aren't very scenic but I doubt you'll be in those. Further south, just a bit, off the Pacific Coast Highway is the lovely town of Seal Beach. It's got a pier, nice restaurants. We were there last January and it was warm enough to walk around and enjoy the blue skies.
Travel Tips for San Pedro
Discover the history of the place

History!
San Pedro takes much pride of its history, especially in regards to anything nautical and related to politics, police and firefighters. If you are wanting to discover Los Angeles for historical reasons (rather than the typical Hollywood stuff), San Pedro is a great place to start exploring and learning.

Noticing San Pedro's Tolerance: Beacon House
by marinarena
Beacon Street runs parallel to San Pedro's waterfront. By 6th and Beacon, there is the Beacon House, a place that most people will and should not enter, with good reason. Yet, it is a place to get to know if you want to discover the heart of San Pedro. Beacon House is a halfway house, especially for men who are recovering from alcoholism and other addiction. This establishment serves as a healthy place for men to become sound in body, mind and spirit. San Pedro proves to have a big heart for those who can be hard to embrace at first approach.
Beacon House throws an intriguing annual block party to supoort its residents and this event is mainly why I mention Beacon House here. It's a, well, how do I say...a....an eccletic event. Think if the historic Haight-Ashbury intersection in San Francisco were to throw a party --only, a totally sober event- no alcohol allowed !!! Scenes from the block are still wild and crazy though with freestyle hip-hop dance-offs (more on the grinding side of it), a bangin' stage for rock bands and just with colorful commentary of the locals. Pics to come in a travelogue very soon!
San Pedro

Most locals just call it Pedro (pronounced Peedro, long e sound), and it is unique when compared to most SouthBay Cities. It is a very tight knit community where most people know eachother and have lived here for a while.
I usually get to San Pedro by taking the 110 Harbor Freeway South til it ends.

San Pedro: What A Surprise

"Charming Port Town"
As many times as I have been to California, I never thought to go to San Pedro. Yuk. A port town. But my sister told me this was a cute place, so we went there and sure enough it was. Kind of artsy. We walked around looking for a place to eat and couldn't decide between two restaurants. So we finally picked Neil's Pasta & Seafood Grill for no particular reason. What a nice restaurant and good food. The other restaurant was more casual and hippyish. This one was more elegant.
This is a rather facinating place not only because of the little art galleries, but also because it the port of Los Angeles.
