Best Western Cavalier Oceanfront Resort

A good Motel
San Simeon is what you could say lacks a bit in lodging choices, but the Cavalier is one that you should consider staying at. When we made the reservations we were given the choice of an Ocean Front Room or Standard Room. The Ocean Front rooms are the closest to the beach and have windows that face the ocean straight on. However, the $140 difference did not quite fit into our budget so we opted for the standard room.
When we arrived in the evening it was right before sunset. They had just started some Bon Fires in 3 permanent Fire Pits/Chimneys above the beach adjacent to the Motel. This was a very nice and warm place to watch the sunset.
Once inside our room there were 2 queen beds as well as a Desk and Chairs. We also had all of the amenities, Hair Dryer, Iron, Coffee Maker, In Room Safe and a DVD Player. They also have an Honor Bar, which we did not get into.
The room was Clean and very well maintained. Even though we did not have an Ocean Front Room, we could open our curtains and see the ocean. The complex consisted of several buildings but it did seem that most of the rooms had at least some view of the ocean. This was also a pleasant surprise to wake up the next morning and hear the waves crashing on the beach. We even saw a couple of seals bobbing in the water.
Unique Quality: Great Views
Do yourself a favor don't stay here!
This is the hotel I chose to have my wedding reception. That was my biggest mistake. They ruined our reception! They gave us an outdated menu they couldn't prepare. They gave us added on charges two days before our wedding and wanted us to sign a contract agreeing to pay charges that were never mentioned to us. At that point if we would have canceled we would of lost our deposit and well our wedding was in two days. We rented both rooms until 10PM. When we returned from pictures at 7:45 we found the staff breaking down tables around our guests including our 97 year old grandmother. They had discarded my centerpieces and party favors onto a corner table. They should not have broken the room down until 10PM per our agreement. Many guest thought our reception was over. The restaurant manager was rude about it. I was so upset I left my reception early so I wouldn't cry in front of my guests. I was so shocked! When taking it up with the owner of the hotel he was absolutely rude to us. We never received an apology for their mistakes. I feel like they did the bait and switch on us. Having our reception at this hotel was the worst mistake of my life. We had planned to go every year to this hotel for our anniversary.... We no longer feel that way and it makes me sad. Don't stay here boycott this hotel! Shame on them!
Unique Quality: Worst treatment I have ever received at a hotel! Don't stay here!
More about Best Western Cavalier Oceanfront Resort
We just returned from an anniversary trip along Highway 1 and truly enjoyed our stay at the Best Western Cavalier. Had an ocean front room, fireplace, big white robes, etc. Watching the sun set and sitting by the bonfires they light on the beach gave us some beautiful memories. I would highly recommend this hotel for those visiting the Pacific Coast.
Great Family Motel
Stay here! Especially if you're going to Hearst Castle or you're looking for a half-way driving spot between San Francisco and L.A. Our family trip started in San Francisco and ended in Orange County. We stayed at the Best Western Cavalier after much research(including Trip Advisor) and would highly recommend it. This place feels like a throwback to the 50's and 60's! There aren't surrounding fancy townhomes on the oceanfront, no "grade A malls", not even a Starbucks! But this place is cool. We stayed in the main buidlings with ocean view(not ocean front). Rooms have fireplaces and there's 3 bonfires at sunset for smores! What great photos we got! An unassuming video store is next door with a good selection(Even Hearst Castle and Citizen Kane tapes) for your in-room VHS. There's even car window wipes attached to the buidling itself for your vehicle(haven't seen this in decades). A coin laundry is on the premises. A charming area; check out nearby Elephant Seals plus the Hearst Castle. It's "tourist-ty" but well worth seeing!
Good motel - clean, everything works, convenient
Stayed at this Best Western for two nights at the end of June. Motel is clean, beds are comfortable, bathrooms are fine. Pool was the best part, water temperature was extremely warm, estimate 93 degrees. This was great especially the first night when it was windy and cold. The wind, San Simeon by the beach gets very very very windy. Don't plan on visiting the sandy beach, there isn't one. The nightime camp fires are nice for smores. Would be nice if they cleaned the bird stuff off of the chairs.
Get the Ocean FRONT (not "view") room - well worth it. Right on the water. If you can handle a few stairs, second floor is much better - otherwise people walk right in front of you. Very comfortable room.bed, etc. - they really aim to please.
The restaurant is decent enough - about as good as you'll find in the area (although Bistro Soleil in Cambria is quite good) and they'll deliver anything on the menu (not just what they list as room service - get the actual restaurant menu) to your room - and very reasonably priced. Come prepared to do nothing but veg - watch in the ocean, the fireplace, soak in the big tub and have them bring you food. Skip the castle - too touristy.
Nice hotel on the beach
Stayed Aug. 1 for a visit to Hearst Castle. This is a nice place with extra amenities not usually found at a motel. It was very clean with comfortable beds (although the flat pillows leave a lot to be desired). As it is pretty chilly in San Simeon at night, the heat lamp in the bathroom was a nice touch. Also, we enjoyed the bonfires on the beach in the evening. Had a good breakfast in their restaurant at a reasonable price. Only negative was a window screen in our room was broken, forcing us to keep the window closed all night. Would recommend this place for a stay in San Simeon.
What a treat!
Our family, including children 9, 11 and 12, stayed here on our trip up the coast. This place was a suprising treat for us! The hotel is right on the water's edge. From our room we were able to see a magnificent sunset over the water. Room decor is average but clean. No need to spend much time indoors though. The hotel has 2 pools that are heated to bath tub temperature. The kids (and I) loved it! The hotel also has 3 outdoor fireplaces setup on the bluff which the staff light right after sunset. It was very relaxing to sit in front of the fire listening to the waves crashing on the shore in the evening.
We ate dinner and breakfast at the hotel restaurant. Food was great and plenty of selections! The added bonus is the hotel's closeness to the Heast Castle. We were able to wake up, eat breakfast and get to our tour at 9:30 am without any stress. Would have loved to have stayed a second night. Will definitely stay here next time!
Surfers and S'Mores
This is a lovely, clean property. My fiance and I stayed one night in an upper floor king room facing the ocean (the hotel calls this the "King's Row" section). The bed was comfortable, the balcony spacious, the fireplace cozy, and we had a great view of the surfers catching waves. We also saw sea otters. (The hotel provides binoculars in the rooms.) The staff was wonderful and welcoming (many have been there over ten years). In the evening, we went to one of the hotel's three fire pits overlooking the ocean. Bring s'mores supplies! Room service was fast, but I have to say the food was average. There are lots of families here, but the kids were well behaved. We still felt like it was a romantic place. Five minutes from Hearst Castle.
Marginal Hotel, Great View
Stayed at the Cavalier for one night in August en route to San Simeon. Room was below average in cleanliness and amenities (especially toilet - not cleaned well at all). Room was shopworn, pillows flat (although linens were clean), carpet stained. The rooms with two beds are not as nicely appointed as the king suites with the fireplaces. But we were travelling with kids. Notwithstanding all this, there are really no better choices in San Simeon, although something in Cambria might have been nicer. And we did enjoy the bonfires on the beach, the nice view and the heated pool. The restaurant also served a very nice, reasonably priced breakfast.
