Along the beach in San Simeon
by Pavlik_NL about Several hotels, motels and inns.
The closest that one can stay near Hearst Castle is at San Simeon itself. Here are a series of hotels and motels along the beach that variate in pricelevel and comfort. Nice of the location is the possibility on a eveningwalk along the waterline and - with the right rooms - the sound of the surf at night.

It was simply incredible... amazing...
This is a upscale hotel, one which has seen a few better days, directly on the beach in beautiful San Simeon California. It has this charm... old and rustic. My husband and I spent three very, VERY romantic nights at The Morgan.
It is located right in the middle of the wine growing area. It is not the far from Santa Barbara right on Highway 1.
I have these amazing memories of laying in bed with my sweetie, sipping wine and seeing the incredible California countryside outside of the window. Fantastically romantic!
Helpful, kind staff
THE BEST night's sleep in a long, long time.
The perfect place to explore that magnificent area and Hearst Castle.
Very clean rooms. Ours had this beautiful wicker furniture which gave the atmosphere....
THERE IS NOTHING - NOTHING AT ALL - I would change about The Morgan! Simply incredible!

Depending on whether you started driving north or south, San Simeon is either the beginning or the end of Hwy 1. San Simeon was the "end of the trail" for our drive down scenic Hwy 1 from San Jose. There isn't much here. It is very serene-countryside, the ocean, Elephant Seals and of course the Hearst Castle.

William Randolph Hearst was born in San Francisco in 1863. His interest for the arts started when he toured Europe with his mother when he was ten years old. Oh yes, his father was rich, but he would become richer still. He became one of the largest newspaper and magazine publishers in the US. He also owned a movie studio that was related to MGM. Hearst started constructing his castle in 1919. He kept on expanding and improving. The castle, la Cuesta Encantada or the Enchanted Hill, is close to San Simeon by the Pacific Coast, about 250 miles north of LA or halfway to San Francisco. The building was part of his art collection. He imported Egyptian, Greek and Roman monuments and statues. Floors and ceilings were bought from European castles and incorporated in his buildings. The oldest statues are Egyptian, they represent the goddes sekmeth and are dated 1300 BC! Flemish 17th century tapestry brighten up the living room. Even the trees by the swimming pool were imported from Greece.
The weather was foggy when we were there, which gave it an extra mysterious touch, it was like being on a remote island. If you're driving the 101, Hearst Castle is a stop you just have to make.

Hearst Castle is the only thing I remember about San Simeon. I was only there for a day so it's all I had time to do. It was a breathtaking "house" though. See the picture I took when I was there...

I am wanting to visit Hearst Castle in August and am trying to find out the time for the last tour of the day for Tour 1. I see that at present it is 3.20 pm and I have emailed them to see what time they are open until but they have just said it will be later.
Seems like a silly question I know, but we are driving from SF to LA and need as much information as possible to arrange where we will be and when to book accomodation. I thought maybe somebody had done the tour and would be able to help

Plenty of accom at nearby San Simeon (sorry if my spelling is wrong - what do you expect from an Aussie - LOL). There are a number of motels that straddle the highway within easy distance to the castle.
