Travel advice for people in there 80's
by Pennytwigg
My 80 year old parents are going to Santa Barbara the last weekend in September for a wedding. They want to travel to Yosemite and possibly Sausilto. They will have about seven days starting September 27. We need suggestions to get them to Yosemite with little or no driving. I am wondering about Amtrak or tours. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated including alternate stops. They will rent a car but we are not comfortable about them driving. Yosemite is high on there list of places to visit but my dad has problems walking. Thanks!!!

Yes, you can travel by train and bus. See the webpage: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g61000-c64594/Yosemite-National-Park:California:Traveling.To.Yosemite.By.Train.And.Bus.html

They need to get to Merced and then take the YARTS (Yosemite Area Regional Transit System) shuttle from the transit center in downtown Merced. They stop at the AMTRAK station in Merced 23rd and K street.
AMTRAK has a bus that will take them from SB to Bakersfield where they will catch the train to Merced. The train ride is a great way to see part of the CA central valley.

In order to accomplish this they would need to arrive in San Francisco to begin with. Sausalito is a small town north of San Francisco. There are day tours from San Francisco that go to Alcatraz, Muir Woods and Sausalito. There are tours from SF to Yosemite, both overnighters and all day.
Then they would fly to Santa Barbara for the wedding.

That's a great plan Erik, except the wedding is in Santa Barbara the weekend of the 24th-26th of September. As the poster says:<"They will have about seven days starting September 27."> So, they would be leaving from Santa Barbara on the 27th, after the wedding, trying to get to Yosemite and Sausalito, not able to do it the other way around.

OK Larry, I finally got it. (Had to read it twice.....)
How about going to Santa Barbara for the wedding, and then fly to San Francisco where they can do the rest......just in reverse.

Right on Erik.
Travel Tips for Santa Barbara
palm trees for photography buffs!
by tvdandy
I believe one of the coolist things to shoot are palm trees, against the mountains, against the sunrise/sunset, against the blue skies. There are so many opportunities to get many great shots in a variety of framing. Below are a few examples. Remember, the best part, this is free!
Surf's Up!!
by Jmill42
If you would dream up and describe your perfect beach community, Santa Barbara would be it. Obviously, I am not saying it has the best surf! What I am saying is that this place is SO clean, SO beautiful it boggles your mind. It is EXTREMELY expensive to live here, but hey price matches demand, right? If you go here, you'll know why. Just looking at the idealic beaches was awesome.
Amazing views of the city

This is a shot of the downtown area of Santa Barbara. Notice the uniform red roofs on the buildings and houses, organized streets, and palm trees. In the distance you can see the coastline and the ocean. This view is just beautiful.

Taking Street Art to another level, the Madonnari Festival has been a Santa Barbara institution since its inception in 1987. Named after the Italian name for street artists, the huge block party features live music, vendors selling Italian food and attracts artists from around the world to the area in front of the Santa Barbara Mission. It is generally held the end of May. We were in Santa Barbara in early June and while the festival was over, the works of art were still pretty fresh and looking good.
Dress for the Weather

Santa Barbara, like the rest of Southern California is cool during the winter months and sunny and warm during the summer. Santa Barbara is a fairly laid back small city. If you are planning to do site seeing, pack casual clothes and comfortable walking shoes. Bring a light jacket or sweater for cool summer evenings. For winter, best to layer as daytime can be warm if the sun is out, however in the shade or if it is windy, it can get pretty chilly.
