Elegant Dinner for a Special Occasion

by rstary about Stonehouse

This restaurant sits on a hill on the San Ysidro Ranch. Bring your wallet and make sure you are celebrating an important event. They will make it worth your while. We sat outside in a lovely garden area and had a delicious meal. I had the prime filet and it was delicious! It was coupled with a layered potato dish somewhat similar to au gratin but firmer in texture. It was excellent. Save room for dessert! I had the bananas foster and it was to die for!

San Ysidro Ranch

by Stealthtraveldog04

My wife and I are traveling to the United States next spring, as we do almost every year, and would like to stay at the San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito, California. Can anyone tell me more about it? I reviewed the Web site last week, but would love some feedback from a fellow jetsetter! We love to travel and try new things as often as we can. Last year we stayed at Halekulani in Honolulu, Hawaii USA, it was absolutely delightful.

Cheers!

The San Ysidro Ranch is no Halekulani, and I find the cottages a little musty. Their kitchens should be reopened by spring, so the dining will be up to par, but in my opinion I would look at the El Encato Hotel & Garden Villas in Santa Barbara close to the Mission. Their website: www.elencatohotel.com
They also have a superb dining room.

Thank you for your input on this. I tried that Web site, it didn't work.

I am so sorry to have left a (n) out of the name of the "El Encanto Hotel and Garden Villas" in Santa Barbara. Of course the site I gave would not work. Again, I apologize for the delay in your being able to see a great hotel. The right website is: www.elencantohotel.com

Hello travelgourmet,
I recently went to San Ysidro Ranch for a long weekend and it was heavenly, completely luxurious and relaxing. I felt so catered to and taken care of, it was such a gorgeous weekend! The service was beyond incredible, and the staff was so friendly and personable. I never had to ask twice for anything.
I realized that you were not completely impressed with San Ysidro Ranch. I think you may have been looking for more adventure and activities, while I thought the place was cut out for people who are looking to relax and escape their hectic lives. I live and work full time in L.A. and my husband of 15 years and I splurge once a year on a vacation for just the two of us. SYR gave us the time we needed together and just let us enjoy each other’s company.
I give it my full recommendation, and we plan on making SYR a tradition!
Ciao,
Judy

Hello Judy. Happy to hear that report from you regarding San Ysidro Ranch. My wife and I will give it a try again, now that I am into my relaxed and be pampered stage of life. lol I enjoyed both locations before and also enjoy the Ojai Valley Inn & Spa in nearby Ojai.

RE: RE: San Ysidro Ranch

That sounds excititng! Where is Oaji? I'm not too famiiliar with the area, so I was just curious. Sounds interesting.

by travelgourmet

Hello again, the question about Ojai is stunning, since it is a small town jewel just north of LA, inland of Ventura, about 6 miles, that is well known for art and unique shops. Not only is the Spa magnificent, golfing, tennis, and horseback riding are available. Check out their website: www.ojairesort.com

How about this:

http://www.uphamhotel.com/

I've not stayed there but the restaurant is very nice. Looks like a great place to stay if you have the money.

December 30th is a Saturday and virtually all hotels will have a two or three night minimum due to the NYE holiday.

Best reasonable hotel is The Eagle Inn

for ritzy stay at the ritz or if you just want a place look anywhere on state street.

Hi, you may want to check out the Harbor View Inn, it is right across the street from Stearns Wharf. A very nice hotel with a gorgeous pool area and jacuzzi. They also have a restaurant on-site where we enjoyed breakfast daily, it is called Eladio's.

It was very nice to be right across the street from the beach, walking paths and the wharf. www.harborviewsb.com is the website. Have fun! :)

If money is no object, the finest hotel in SB ( Montecito, actually ) is the San Ysidro Ranch.

Travel Tips for Santa Barbara

Budweiser - King of all Beers?

by Jerelis

Let’s make no secret of it. We both like a nice cold glass of beer. Being abroad is always a challenge to find a beer we like, which reflects our taste of having a beer. In America it wasn’t really that hard to find the brand we liked, it was clearly Budweiser, popularly referred to as Bud.

Budweiser is a lager made with a proportion of rice as a substitute adjunct for barley malt. This immedaitely shows the problem for selling it in Europe as traditional brewers serve beer with only the four main ingredients (water, hops, wheat and barley). So Budweiser is not produced accoring to the German "Reinheitsgebot". But we found out that it didn’t taste distinctively different.

The Budweiser bottle is a rather familiar icon to most Americans. The bottle has remained relatively unchanged since its introduction in 1876. We liked it, but the fraze “King of all Beers” is a bid of an overstatement!

Skate Boarding

by vigi

Walk further down to the center, there's a big skate boarding playground for the kids. Pretty fun looking at them, but seems like Santa Barbara is not a place for me though... too family and kids oriented.

Other places to visit in Santa...

by JaumeBCN

Other places to visit in Santa Barbara are of course the Old Mission, founded the day of Santa Barbara in 1786. Also the County Courthouse, built on Spanish style, the Presidio or the Jose Lobero Theatre. From the hills above the town you can enjoy beautiful views of Santa Barbara and the ocean.

Hiking in Santa Barbara

by kidkilowatt

Santa Barbara is a great location to go on a hike. Unfortunately, we did not have a lot of time to do this as it was just one of the activities we were trying to pack into our short time in Santa Barbara. If you come into Santa Barbara and want to go on a hike or two but don't know where to go, I suggest going to the visitors center across from the beach in downtown Santa Barbara. They have lots of hiking resources, from entire books to $3.00 maps with a general overview of popular hikes in the area. We got a $3.00 map and found a nice moderate hike and went out and explored. Hiking in Santa Barbara is fantastic- if you can get one in, even if it is a short little loop, I suggest it. If you cannot find the visitor center, I have included a number I found- hopefully they can give you directions to get to them and get the materials you need. Bring water- it is quite warm in Santa Barbara
