24 Hrs in SB

by nino224

Arriving in SB around noon on a Sunday and leaving early the next morning to catch a flight. I've read about the beach and pier to watch the dolphins. Town Hall tower for aerial views, and the trolley for a spin around town.
Any other must-do's I can squeeze into 12 hours?

Also read where someone suggested finding a hotel on State street and keeping clear of Haley St. Is that right?

There are number of things to see and do in Santa Barbara. The main street is indeed State Street with all the shopping and restaurants. Tha SB Mission is a place you should see when visiting there, and the Pier is a good place as well. Plenty of hotels on and around the beach. The Town Hall is a historical building and probably the nices in California. Nearby Montecito is to Santa Barbara, what Beverly Hills is to Los Angeles, with many stars living there including Oprah. Many historical hotels with a rich film star history. Here is a website with all you need.

The mission at Santa Barbara is one of the most beautiful in California. Even if you aren't into history, the architecture and grounds are very impressive. It's just a short drive through a residential neighborhood from State Street.

Other points of interests are the Spanish-Moorish County Courthouse (1929), El Presido de Santa Barbara State Historic Park (contains several restored Spanish military buildings) and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. This museum has displayed art made by George Inness, Winslow Homer and Edward Hopper.

June Gloom.. but just wait...

by Pounder73

Much of California’s Coast has what can be described as “June Gloom.” This is during hot summer months when the cool air from the ocean’s waters, (from the Alaskan Current), meets the hot inland air. Those that lived there, always found it funny because the tourist come in during summer months, but the spring, and better yet, fall months were always the best. If you are here and it is really foggy and want to go where the sun is, see me T’logues for Red Rock, that will take you right where you want to go. And don’t worry, the fog usually always clears up in the late afternoon around 3 or 4pm.

Fiesta Week!

by Cammel11

During the first week of August SB holds it most famous festival: fiesta or Old Spanish Days. The whole community gets together to celebrate the heritage of the city. Ther are parades, bands playing, carnival type of events, rodoes and extra special parties at the bars. You can also enjoy many beautiful dance performances (ballet, folkloric..) at various locations during the week including the Mission, De La Guera Plaza and the sunken garden at the Courtyard. Check out the website for the event calendar.

getting out of uniform

by richiecdisc

Nice to not carry anything but a camera for three whole days! Nice to wear some civilian clothes rather than the desert whites we'd been wearing for months. A wide angle is essential for getting good shots of buildings in towns and a good zoom really helps with shots of humming birds. Nice to not have to set up the tent for three whole days! Looks like Ernst learned something at The Brooks Institute. He even makes me look good in this shot. D, well, she always looks great.
