The Upham isn't too far........there is the Holiday Inn Hotel Virginia....a Travelodge on State Street....the Orange Tree and Lemon Tree Inns. the Days Inn is okay too. Will you have a car or do you need something REALLy close.

I will need to be able to get around by foot or by cab. Preferably by foot so i can stay close. But quick cab is fine too.

I will take a look at these. Lots of things are booked!

thanks!

I don't know what your budget is, but here are some more places you could look into. 5 blocks away from Hotel Santa Barbara is Hotel Andalucia. Then starting at 6 blks away in the other direction (at Stearns Wharf on the beach and going out to the Marina) there are quite a few possibilities: Harbor View Inn, Ala Mar Motel, Hotel Oceana, Villa Rosa Inn, Casa Del Mar, Harbor House Inn, West Beach Inn, Marina Beach Motel, Franciscan Inn, Castillo Inn, Best Western, Brisas del Mar, Country Inn by the Sea, & Colonial Beach Inn. I haven't stayed in any of these places and they vary as to type of accommodation but maybe you will find something here. The furthest walk/taxi ride from these places would be about 12 blocks.

I ended up finding a room at the hotel oceana. It was reasonably priced and a good location. It was a few hundred bucks less per night than Andalucia.

thanks for all the suggestions!

It's good to hear that you found something. Hotel Oceana is across the street from the beach, so that's a bonus. Enjoy your time in SB.

Travel Tips for Santa Barbara

Climb the hills for a view

by zrim

It is very easy to gain altitude and find places with million dollar views. Just head north or east and you will soon find yourself in the foothills amongst the seven figure houses. Look out over the red-tiled roofs towards the beautiful pacific blues. The Channel Islands are visible on the horizon. Very nice. Now if I could just figure out how to afford one of these homes perched on the hillsides.

Pets in Santa Barbara

by Cammel11

Santa Barbara is a pet friendly community. If you don't want to leave your dog at home while on vacation bring it along! Many of the hotels allow dogs but do charge either a deposit or fee. Call the hotel before you book to see what kind of fee they have for dogs. most all beaches also allow dogs, a popular dog beach is Aroyo Burro Beach. Many of the restaurants on State Street have patios you can sit on while you tie up your dog outside of the patio. Here is a great website for more information about dog friendly things to do in Santa Barbara http://www.dogfriendly.com/server/travel/uscities/guides/w/cities/wonlinecityCASanta_Barbara.shtml.

Clean but Disturbing

by vigi

After a while, they started cleaning the beach. Well... perhaps they already cleaning but I just didn't realize. Anyway, these cleaning trucks very disturbing and annoying. Not only they are noisy, we could not enjoy a nice walk on the beach too, not talking about lying there for a tan which is impossible.

Summer Solstice Parade

by Cammel11

The Summer Solstice parade is one parade that everyone looks forward to every year. The event is the largest art festival in Santa Barbara. It is something I can't really explain, it's something that you need to see to believe it. I guess you could compare it to a small carnival or mardi gras parade. The Parade is held on the saturday following Summer Solstice around 12:00 PM. The parade ends at Alameda park, located at the corner of Anacapa and Micheltorena Streets. The following festival at the park includes, live music, children's area and local art.

Hike Cathedral Peak

by VA_Dave

Cathedral peak hike is a fantastic 6 mile RT hike up a mountain ridge just behind Santa Barbara. The views of Santa Barbara and the ocean are gorgeous.

If you are in great shape, you may take around 1.5 hrs each way, but most of us take around 3 hours each way. You may meet some dogs at the trailhead who want to join you. Welcome them. They are great climbers!
