More about Coast Santa Cruz Hotel
Had a great stay
by TripAdvisor Member TeriHarness
Stayed here a few days before Labor Day. Loved it. My husband and I have stayed here before it was taken over by Joie de Vivre. They did a great job updating it. It now reflects the cool beach vibe of Santa Cruz. Loved the retro rooms and colors. The beds and linens are outstanding. One thing we love about staying here is being able to sleep with the patio door open all night and listen to the ocean waves. The rates have definately bumped up since the renovation and I think they may have trouble getting people to pay those kind of rates. We caught a deal for $198 per night, but noticed that the regular rates go from $379 on up. It's a great hotel, but I don't think I would pay that much, which is sad because I love this hotel, but just can't afford that much for a 2-night stay. The room service food was great, and I was surprised by the reasonable prices (at least by room service standards). We were told the hotel was only at 40% capacity while we were there. We got a tower room. We didn't have any of the problems indicated by a prior commentor. Regarding the Walmart shower curtain...our bathroom had a shower door. The shower was awesome. Best water pressure I've ever experienced. All of the staff were attentive and pleasant. Enjoyed laying by the pool and receiving drink and food service. Don't drink the Dream Margarita though, it wasn't very good. We will definately come back here every summer as long as we can get a discounted rate. It will be interesting to see if the hotel will be able to get people to pay $400 per night to stay there. That isn't really an area where people would typically pay that much. But loved the hotel. If you can get a decent price, I highly recommend you give it a stay.
Very disappointing

Never again. The Dream Inn was not a dream at all, and did not meet our expectations for a "luxury" hotel.
The front desk staff cared more about personal conversations than getting us into our room. Very irritating.
Tacky furniture and what looked like a strange 70's dormitory theme. (Lime green and bright yellow shouldn't be part of a $300 a night room) We expected something classy at that price. Strange chairs that were bright yellow and not at all comfortable for someone with back problems.
Our TV continually gave us problems. Other guests on our floor were having a noisy in room party. No one really seemed to care.
The only positives I can offer were: the view from our room. It was very nice. The other positive: No cockroaches. Those two things mean nothing when you're otherwise miserable.
Not the romantic getaway we expected by any stretch of the imagination.
This hotel is best left to college kids on spring break.
Wonderful

We stayed with our toddler for our third anniversary. The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. I was a little disappointed with the view from our first room but we found out that our internet and phone were out of service so we were transferred to a higher room!!! I can't complain about anything there and although it is a little pricey, you get what you pay for. We actually opted to stay another night we had such a wonderful experience and the pool is a great alternative to the dangerous tides I had to watch my baby in. GREAT MARGARITAS! The only thing I would suggest to this hotel would be to expand their menu. Great food but not much to choose from.
What a fantastic place!

A lovely fresh, clean, newly renovated hotel, tastefully updated with a 60's retro feel to match the architecture. A highlight of our trip and a welcome change from the typical disapointing american kitch. My partner and I stayed 2 nights in a delux king in September.
Birthday breakfast with pancakes and fresh fruit, crab cakes and eggs benedict on our sunny balcony, overlooking the beach, Listening to the waves crashing and the sea lions on the pier. It couldn't have been more perfect.
Super powerful shower, flat screen TV, new crisp white linen, free parking, helpful friendly staff and cocktails by the pool.
The only negatives were that the restaurant wasn't complete yet so any food was room service or poolside .........and so far, nowhere to hang your towel in the bathroom.
We Booked at a great rate £84 plus bonus10% discount, with a voucher I found on an internet search, with hotels.com.
I'd recommend it to anyone with modern tastes.
Great view and fantastic service

On our three week tour of CA this was one of the best hotels we stay at. It's recently been refurbished with a modern and clean feel. The location is right on the beach with an easy walk to down town. We had a deluxe room with really comfortable bed and great views. The service was fantastic from the complementary valet parking on arrival to friendly and helpful staff throughout the hotel.
One thing to watch out for is the room rates which can vary quite considerably even from one day to the next. We decided to stay an extra night and were quote $239 at the front desk but on their website it was only $180. The guy on reception seemed genuinely surprised but happily honoured the rate.
Great Hotel with Retro Charm

The Dream Inn was truly amazing! During a week long tour of California I spent one glorious day and night at this newly renovated property. Decorated in retro 60's the hotel is completely modern and offered a wide array of great amenities including an iPod docking station ,power strip built right into the desk and of course spectacular ocean views. If you are in Santa Cruz I definitely say stay here.
Finally....Something decent in SC!!!
by TripAdvisor Member Msk6261
With a son at UCSC, we have been down to visit SC many times in the last few years. I've posted reviews on some of our visits as we have been desperately searching for nice accommodations. We just wanted someplace that we would consider returning to. We had not found anyplace worthy of our repeat business until now.
We were greeted very friendlily at this newly refurbished beachfront inn. .It has only been opened a few months after being taken over by the boutique hotel chain Joie De Vivre. They have converted it from a dowdy, run-down ex-destination to a fun, and trendy bright spot on the Monterey Bay.
The service was wonderful. The rooms are a little tight but they did a first class job of remodeling. It was fun to sit on the deck overlooking the beach and the sunset. We enjoyed sleeping with the windows open hearing the waves crashing, sea lions barking and fog horn blowing in the distance. We awoke early to stroll along the West Cliff path and empty boardwalk. It was quite relaxing.
Our room came equipped with a flat screen TV, plush towels, comfortable bed, internet access and strong shower. The linens were still a bit stiff but they should soften up I assume.Everything is still new and clean and hip. So..... as long as they do a good job of maintenance and upkeep, I believe they have the right recipe for success.
You are still situated in the "honky tonk" SC Boardwalk area however that could really use an infusion of city planning and updating. But maybe this will be the start of things to come for the region. JDV is a welcome addition.
Fantastic, perfect beach location!
by TripAdvisor Member Paulalv
The Dream Inn is outstanding!! They have recently updated the hotel and the outcome is stunning. A perfect location on the sand, every room has a balcony with an ocean view. The wharf/pier is within steps and we enjoyed several of the restaurants on the pier. Restaurants, shopping and the Boardwalk are within walking distance. The rooms are colorful, the bedding is top notch, shower was great. Very friendly staff, the front desk & valet were courteous & helpful. Santa Cruz has much to offer with a quaint downtown, the Redwoods are only six miles away and the beaches are gorgeous. I would highly recommend the Dream Inn and look forward to staying there in the future.
Great location and views

The newly renovated Dream Inn was comfy, clean and fun. The hotel is still doing renovations (no main restaurant yet), but does have a limited pool and room service menu. The food was above average, as was the food service. Luis who served us breakfast by the pool is outstanding.
We booked late, so the only room we could get was a suite. It was too big for us, but would be great for a family. We'd probably book the room again just because it was so comfy.
The water pressure in the shower was good and the bathroom was roomy.
The bed was like sleeping on a cloud (what they call the upper floors of the rooms in the tower).
Reasonably priced honor bar treats, including snacks from local merchants-a really nice touch.
Valet guys were good, the front desk woman who did check-in/out for us could have acted as if she liked her job.
If you have kids, get room closer to the pool. If you want it a little quieter, ask for a room in the tower.
Great views of the bay, binoculars in the room allowed us the check out birds, surfers and boaters.
Boadwalk is about 1/2 mile down the street, beach is a few steps from the pool area.
