Motels in Santa Cruz

by loej33

We will be arriving in Santa Cruz for the first time in April. Can anyone recommend a hotel. I do not know of any attractions etc. to be close to, except the boardwalk, is that worth seeing? What is Mystery Spot? Thanks for your help.

Santa Cruz has plenty of motels, and a few hotels. It just depends on what you want. The regular chains, Best Western etc., are a safe, in uninspiring, option. Several motels are located on Ocean St., which is a blah area. The Santa Cruz Coast, formerly the Dream Inn, is right by the main beach.

The Mystery Spot is a tourist trap of interest to some. I was there once over 15 years ago. Depending on your interests, you might have more fun exploring the beaches, forests and shops downtown.

On the Beach boardwalk is a must, and the must is the Giant Dipper roller coaster. Just before they closed I was able to ride it 10 times in a row. IT WAS AWESOME!! Relaxing on my patio overlooking the beach with family.

Frisbee Golf in the mountains

by Parklife

De Laveaga Park offers one of the best frisbee golf courses in California. If you have no clue what that means, essentially it is exactly what it sounds like. You 'golf' a hole by throwing a frisbee towards a basket rather than using a club and golf ball.

It's a cheap sport (there actually isn't any greens fee) and since you're just walking around the park it's a great way to get outside. Golf Frisbees (or perhaps they're are technically Discs) are cheap ($5 or so) and frankly, you can use one the whole time or you can use more than one. It's a laidback sport. There is no place to get discs at the course so you need to bring your own.

When taking a scenic drive along Rt 1, pullover at a stop for a good look around and a picnic. At one stop we scrambled down a rocky cliff and walked and waded along the beach. At our next stop, there was a picnic area where we had lunch, as well as trails leading through the rolling hills along the sea. We saw lots of sea lions sunning themselves on little rocky islands, not far from where we were standing.
We only traveled the area between Santa Cruz and San Francisco, but the entire length of RT 1 is supposed to be beautiful!

Enjoy the Redwoods in the Santa Cruz Mountains

by Kiisu

Take the windy mountain drive up Hwy 9 through the Santa Cruz mountains, San Lorenzo Valley and by Big Basin State Park. The small towns of Ben Lomond, Boulder Creek, and Felton are neat little hide-aways. The Redwood groves at Big Basin are wonderful -- spend a day or two camping or hiking up there. If you don't have much time, just take the drive which will lead you to Saratoga in Silicon Valley - then go on to your destination in the Bay Area, or take the quick drive back over 'the hill' on Hwy 17.

One of my all time favorite restaurants is Shadowbrooks. It is a beautiful restaurant where anything you order is wonderful. I also would recommend Zachary's for breakfast or brunch. It is fairly reasonable and positioned along the main street in downtown Santa Cruz. Taqueria Santa Cruz is also a great spot to grab some Mexican food from before heading down to the beach. The Asian Rose is also very good if you like a mix of Asian/Indian food. Really there are so many great restaurants in Santa Cruz that I do not have the time to name them all. What else? Oh you should take the time to go by the different coffee houses -there are some really great ones. However at the moment I can not seem to remember the names.
Shadowbrooks is set within a beautiful garden with tiny waterfalls and small trails that take you down to the bottom of the cliff the restaurant sits on. However if you are tired there is always an old fashion tram car that will take you down to the bottom. It is really a beautiful restaurant.
