Travel Tips for Santa Cruz

Dress In Layers

by jag17

You never know what the weather will be like in Santa Cruz. Even when it's very hot in nearby cities, it can be foggy and drizzling in Santa Cruz. Be sure and pack a sweatshirt with your suntan lotion!

Scenic Coastal Drive Along Rt 1

by kazander

Rent, borrow do whatever you have to do to get a car and drive up Rt. 1, a highway that runs along the coast of California. We traveled only from Santa Cruz to just across the Golden Gate Bridge, but the entire length of the road offers breathtaking views. There are many place to pull off along the way to explore. It is magnificent!

Ano Nuevo State Preserve

by Tom_Fields

This is a favorite gathering spot for elephant seals. With no fear of humans, they allow you to approach. But you should still maintain a respectful distance (stay behind the barriers). Nearby is the Dickerman-Steele House, once the home of an early pioneer family.

Best new restaurant - 2007

by trvlrtom about Hula's Grill

We've enjoyed going to Hula's Grill in Monterey and were pleased to see them open a place in Santa Cruz. The food, atmosphere and service are all just as good here. The menu is creative and everything we had was very good quality. This is not low end food like you get at some Hawaiian BBQ places. They have good seafood, vegetarian entrees, meat dishes ... something that should please everybody.

The atmosphere is retro Hawaiian, sort of kitchy but cool. Very comfortable. Check out the collection of tiki glasses in the cases in the back.
Good drinks too.

Play beach volleyball!

by blos

Buy a cheap ball and have a go. if you've never tried it before it's good fun and and i certainly enjoyed jumping around the place. Try avoid playing in the midday sun though! extremely strenuous. there are public nets all over the beach. and watching isn't half bad either;-)
