    Far from the beach

    by

Budget hotel, it is a bit worn, and about 19 large blocks from the beach, so it is a bit uncentral, but they have a complimentary shuttle service that runs to Third Street shopping mall every hour untill 5 PM.

Nice accomodations.

by TripAdvisor Member MJD1

Very comfortable. Nice size room with king bed. Comfortable chair with ottoman. Desk with large surface that was great for doing computer work. Bathroom/fixtures updated. Very nice. Parking easy with garage below the hotel. Easy access.

OK, but far from the action

by TripAdvisor Member valstock

This is a clean and totally O.K. hotel.
But you definitely need a car or good shoes to get down to the beach or the 3rd street promenade. The closest area is nothing much to see.
There is good cheap parking structures downtown SM.

The wireless internet didnĀ“t work in our room, had to sit in the hallway outside of room.
The niceness of the staff differed a lot during our stay, some of them were excellent, others not.
The Ihop restaurant is pretty factory like for breakfast, go to another place if you wanna feel the local character. The hip "Swingers" diner on Broadway and Lincoln is better.

Comfortable, ideal for a self drive holiday

by TripAdvisor Member Carollovestravel

We stayed at the BW Gateway for 2 nights during our self drive holiday. The property is about 5 minutes drive to the beach and the Third Street Promenade, but the hotel does have a shuttle bus service, we didn't use it as there were four of us, we got cabs which were reasonable. The first day we arrived early evening after spending a great day at Universal Studios. Don't buy your Universal Tickets before you leave as you can get coupons almost anywhere for $10 off per person. Found the hotel easily enough, on check in the staff were very friendly and helpful, as we didn't want to use our car during our stay in LA we left it in the car park which is complimentary. On asking the staff which sight seeing trips they would recommend they were very helpful and offered to call and book our trip for us for the following day, with Amazing LA Tours Inc. Had a great day seeing all the sights of LA, the driver even kindly dropped us at Venice Beach, so that we could experience the boardwalk which has many interesting characters and sights (including muscle beach).

Good for the price

Recently returned from 2 nights at this hotel. Staff were very helpful, room was well equipped, and clean with a comfy bed.

As previous reviews have stated, it is quite far from the main part of Santa Monica (20 blocks from the ocean), however, they do operate a complimentary shuttle every hour to and from the front.

Absolutely loved Santa Monica, and this hotel was very reasonable. Would stay there again, without hesitation, but only if I had a car.

good price and location

by A TripAdvisor Member

Stayed here for four nights at the start of a drive up the coast. Hotel was clean, staff were friendly and the rooms huge. The bed was comfy and all the room amenities met requirements. Although not right in the heart of Santa Monica, the free hotel shuttle to third street meant that going out in the evening was easy (the taxi back cost about $7). The location is good for exploring LA with Hollywood, The Getty Museum and Beverley Hills nearby and access to the interstate (for getting to the beaches down south) is also close.

This is supposed to have won awards for service in the Best Western chain. Dont know for what. It lacks atmosphere and facilities and is just a city centre hotel. Good points are that it is on a convenient route to Santa Monica pier ( 75c on the bus ) and handy for Holywood, Beverly Hills and Universal Studios. Apart from that its ordinary.

Air! We Need Air!

by TripAdvisor Member SLTravels

We booked three nights here recently during a trip to Los Angeles. The room was spacious and clean. There was a chaise lounge in the corner, and a refrigerator (but no microwave).

The window-based HVAC unit was located only inches from my nose, as the bed is close to the window. I resigned myself to receiving an icy blast from the A/C. I wish! The curtains hover only an inch or so above the HVAC unit, and there's no deflector shield to push the air out into the room. Instead, the curtains billow out and the air goes straight up behind the curtains. The windowsill is probably nice and cold, but we flopped around liked beached fish, couldn't sleep from being too warm. If I'd had some safety pins, I would have pinned up the bottoms of the curtains so we might have a chance of getting some airflow.

The only other option that I could see was to leave the curtains open at night (which we did one night), but then I was disturbed by too much light coming into the room (I like a dark room for sleeping). I'm afraid this property only got two stars from me because I couldn't actually *sleep* there.

The parking garage is underground. It involves some tight corners getting into parking spaces, as there are support columns everywhere. On the other hand, it's free -- which can be rare in L.A.

The BW Gateway is close to the beach and wharf, the Third Street Promenade, and St. John's Hospital (if you need to visit a patient). We enjoyed breakfast al fresco at the adjacent IHOP.

If they had spent a few dollars on deflector shields, and moved the chaise lounge next to the window and the bed farther away, this could have been a nice stay.

It did the job.

We stayed in this hotel for four nights and can say that while not outstanding we had no problems and got what we paid for. If you're looking for somewhere quiet then this is the place for you. As part of a large hotel chain what it lacks in character it makes up for in comfort and service.
The room was typically American - large! Lots of space, clean and fresh with a spacious bathroom and a very comfortable king size bed. Room had internet access and tv but was fairly basic.
A small gym is located downstairs, again fairly basic with less than half a dozen machines.
The location was quite a distance to the Third Street Promenade, approx. 30 minute walk along a bleak road with nothing but car showrooms, etc. However the hotel did provide a shuttle service (if you didn't mind waiting a while) to the promenade. They did offer a return service but failed to pick us up, even after phoning them twice.
Breakfast was available from the pancake house downstairs though not included in the price. However there was little in the way of food or entertainment near the hotel in the evenings, Popeye Chicken seemed the only option.
Fine sums at this hotel, nothing more nothing less. Would be great for someone travelling for business purposes but lacking for the tourist. Although we enjoyed our stay paying a little extra to stay closer to the beach would make all the difference.

keeping up apperences

by TripAdvisor Member Beckybaker1982

we stayed in the gateway hotel at the beginning of june this year and found it to be a nice quiet hotel and good value for money. We arrived at the hotel 3 hrs before check in opened and was worried that we would have to wait to get to our room but were happliy suprised when they said our room was ready and could go up straight away! the room itself was very clean and tiday however it was quite small in size and we had no view (unless u count a random building next door as a view). The hotel is too far from the sea front to walk but runs a free shuttle service which is run by a very friendly man who happily chatted to us about keeping up apperences for the short journey to the beach front.
The hotel is far from the activity of Santa Monica so if you want a lively stay i wouldnt recomend here, but if you want somthing a bit quieter here is a good choice. It is on the corner of a main road with good public transport, however this is where the main downfall of the holiday was. During our time in LA we wanted to visit Universal Studios and where happily suprised when the staff gave us information to get there on public transport, saving alot of money on tour prices. So we went to Universal studios and had a brilliant day however they failed to mention how to get home from the park and didnt mention that public transport doesnt run from downtown LA after 6pm. Being two young women (22) in LAs main station at around 10pm is a terrifying experince and i wouldnt recomend anyone to do this! we ended up having to pay $50 for a taxi back to the hotel somthing which we were not pleased about.

if you want to stay in Santa Monica in a quiet location then i would recomend this hotel, but if you were like us and in Santa Monica for the 1st time and want to see all it has to offer then i would suggest staying somewhere closer to the sea front

Seaworld day tour

by SailorRoar

Hi, me and my wife is going to LA in early september, as we have about a week there we want to take a daytour to Seaworld in San Diego. Does anyone know of a tour operator that does one days trips like that. Preferably one that does hotel pickup at Best Western Gateway in Santa Monica?

Re: Seaworld day tour

by ajhno

Santa Monica is quite a hike to San Diego. Car rentals are cheap enough that would be the way to go.

Your hotel concierge is your best resource - they will even schedule for you.
