Beachside Comfort

The Hotel Oceana is located on Ocean Avenue, just across the street from the lovely Palisades Park. The hotel appears to be a remodeled apartment building from the 50's and it carries a 50's French Riviera vibe with it's golden yellow and blue and white color theme. The staff are mainly young 20 somethings, eager to please, and offer friendly, prompt service. The hotel is convenient to public transit, the beach, great dining and more than enough shopping -- Montana Avenue, the Third Street Promenade and Santa Monica Place are all close by.

Unique Quality: On the upside: comfy beds with Frette linens and down comforters, they are more than generous with the large-sized Aveda bath products, sunny balconies with charming bright yellow andirondack chairs overlooking the ocean and Palisades Park, plus a killer pool for hanging out in, surrounded by the charming verandas of other suites decorated with potted rosemary bushes and flowers.

All in all, the Hotel Oceana is perfection -- luxe enough, but small enough; with friendly, personable, and down-to-earth staff, and located right by the beach. Try to get a deal if you can, because this place isn't cheap -- we went in off season and got a substantial discount. However, if you can't get a deal, take comfort in the fact that at least the oranges are free to pick on the property.

Recommended hotels in Santa Barbara

Any recommendations on hotels in the centre of Santa Barbara? Have heard hotels are expensive in Santa Barbara so any suggestions for hotels just outside?

Thanks

The Hotel Santa Barbara is right on State Streetand fairly reasonable prices. We have stayed at the Best Western (there are two of them and I don't remember which was which) and sometimes you can get a reasonable deal at the 4 Seasons.

Why look to the outside of Santa Barbara when there is a hotel/motel that sits only 1 block off the beach and 2 blocks from Sterns Wharf and State Street that is totally refurbished, even down to a name change. It was the Country Inn by the Sea and has maintained the lobby B&B feel, but the rooms are totally modern. See my VT page on this Hotel. http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/736c8/b8758/3/

I think there's a Motel 6 in Santa Barbara - I know there's at least one in Carpinteria just down the road.

We loved the Harbor View Inn, if this place is out of your price range, check out the Hotel Oceana, also on Cabrillo and right across the street from the beach and Stearn's Wharf. :)

LOL, Larry. I was going to suggest the Country Inn by the Sea. It's obviously been a few years since I've been there. Good to have an update.

The way things change in today's economic weather, looking back to old tips and reviewing them is a must. Just cost factors alone have risen in less than a year. Businesses going out or being replaced are now commonplace. the "New" Country Inn of Santa Barbara is named "Avania Inn of Santa Barbara" but it has been completely refurbished and looks great. That's why I enjoy VT, because someone, somewhere, is updating an old tip. Hit that refresh button. lol
