Lodging in SM

by nino224

Hi,

I'm looking for a clean, safe hotel to stay at with my wife and son that's walking distance from the pier and promenade that won't break the bank. Under $150 if possible. Thanks!

It depends when you go. Even the Fairmont can have low prices but, have a look at the Hotel Carmel

I've heard great things about the Holiday Inn which is practically at the Pier's doorstep and a couple blocks (walking distance) to 3rd St. Promendade.

You can also check out Travelodge (reviews not as great as HI) which is just down the street from there. I'd probably go with the Holiday Inn but either one of these places should give you bang for your buck (especially for location you want). Safe...yes, clean...I'm assuming so! Have fun!

VYRDave has it right on for a hotel near the pier and a rate near the $150 mark. See their website: http://www.oceanlodgehotel.com/index.html

Not a hotel but a motel just a 1/2 block from the pier is the Ocean Lodge right on Ocean Ave. It is plain but clean. Priced right and located right. Also a special discount now. See their website: http://www.hotelcarmel.com/

Take into consideration that the hotels in the area that are upscale have a rate double and up, than these two locations.

The H.I. starts at $200. Yikes!

Ocean Lodge doesn't have a discount for when I'll be there, the beginning of April.
It's not looking good.

Travel Tips for Santa Monica

ROUTE 66 : Tip 65 - Stoned again !

by sourbugger

"Back in Chicago I played you a track on the CD as we began this journey. Listen to it again now - see how much more it means"

The music from the Stone came of the tinny speakers of the Ford Crapmobile :

"Well if you ever plan to motor west
Just take my way that’s the highway that’s the best
Get your kicks on route 66

Well it winds from chicago to l.a.
More than 2000 miles all the way
Get your kicks on route 66

Well goes from st. louie down to missouri
Oklahoma city looks oh so pretty
You’ll see amarillo and gallup, new mexico
Flagstaff, arizona don’t forget winona
Kingman, barstow, san bernadino

Would you get hip to this kindly tip
And go take that california trip
Get your kicks on route 66

Third Street Promenade would...

by su_jen

Third Street Promenade would be the best place to go, they've got tons of good food in the mall, and the promenade is something you've got to see first hand. It's only about 3-4 blocks long, but you'll get temptation to buy a lot of stuff there :)

ROUTE 66 : Tip 66 - The end at last !

by sourbugger

"The end of the Santa Monica Boulevard, the Pacific Ocean, the end of road, no more maps, the terminus of Route 66, we did it !"

"Without killing each other"

"Amazingly.. It was some trip"

"Yes, I'm glad I saw the real America, the bit between the East Coast and California which to me is the 'real deal'"

"Umm...Elvis, Churchs, abandoned Gas stations, confused policemen, snapping turtles, terrible food, maple syrup, scorching deserts, giant plastic dinosaurs...it was all in there"

"Now its time to party for a while...in the words of Sheryl Crow....altogether now..."

"All I wanna do is have some fun
Until the sun comes up over Santa Monica Boulevard"

"Although I think the lyrics to another song are even more appropriate to trip along route 66 :
Everyday is a winding road
I get a little bit closer
Everyday is a faded sign
I get a little bit closer to feeling fine

I've been living in a sea of anarchy
I've been living on coffee and nicotine
I've been wondering if all the thing I've seen
Were ever real, were ever really happening"

"Great way to end the trip"

And they all lived happily ever after...

Nearly...they got married

My Unusual Prom Memory

by marinarena

If you are an aviation fan, you would love to see the Museum of Flying. The thing is that as for now (early 2005) it is closed, in anticipation for its grand reopening. Check the site though. It may well reopen by the time you set off on your trip to Santa Monica.

Yes, this site was the site for my Prom (dance) in high school. Oh what memories... A dance floor was set up on the floors of the building. OK, the site of parked vintage airplanes isn't quite romantic, but it was ...umm..different.
