Magnificent Santa Ynez Valley

by MissyWQ

"Read below about Neverland Ranch"

Our Santa Barbara church bus group
enjoyed a trip to Gainey Vineyards and winery.

I personally bought the Chardonney and jokingly called it
Char - don'-nay NOT pronouncing it the French way.
Then I had everyone else laughing and mispronouncing it
and passing out recipes to go with the wine on the bus.

The owner Dan Gainey, gave us interesting tour and his mother Kay Gainey,
who is a member of our church, brought us lunch to enjoy
outdoors surrounded by magnificent vineyard and mountain views.

I used to sell real estate in this valley and many celebrities live there, including John Forsythe from TV's Dynasty, Doc Severnson, Johnny Carson's band leader, actresses, Bo Derrick, Yvonne de Carlo and behind the winery on top of the mountain lived our wonderful president Ronald Reagan and his wife, Nancy.

"Many famous bands have concerts at Gainey Vineyard"

"Michael Jackson's Neverland"

Neverland Ranch is in a remote area in the mountains ABOVE the city of Santa Barbara
and in the county of Santa Barbara which includes: Santa Maria, (where his court trial was and he was exonerated, the plaintiffs were liars and cheats), Solvang the authentic Danish Town, Buellton where I used to live and they filmed the movie "Sideways", Los Olivos where they filmed Mayberry revisited/Andy Griffith, and Santa Ynez (where the Indian Chumash Casino Resort is).

I visited the Ranch in 1984 before the gates were there,
a fellow church member, William Bone, built it for himself.

Michael Jackson bought it in 1988.
My friend, Paul Froemming, a Realtor, sold it to Michael after many meetings.

Background: Neverland Valley Ranch is a developed property in Santa Barbara County, California, most famous for its association with American pop musician Michael Jackson.

The ranch is located at 5225 Figueroa Mountain Rd, Los Olivos, CA 93441, about 5 miles (8 km) north of unincorporated Los Olivos (about eight miles north of the town of Santa Ynez), in the Santa Ynez Valley. The property covers an area of over 2,800 acres. The area surrounding Neverland previously consisted of working ranches; today, the area is made up of vineyards. The property was purchased from golf course entrepreneur William Bone.

The ranch operated as Jackson's private amusement park and home when the facility opened in 1988, but is no longer in operation. It contained, among other things, a zoo and a theme park, with a Ferris wheel, merry-go-round, zipper, spider, sea dragon, wave swinger, super slide, dragon wagon kiddie roller coaster, and bumper cars. It is named after Neverland, the fantasy island in the story of Peter Pan, where children never grow up.

Travel Tips for Santa Ynez

Pick your own blueberries at Restoration Oaks Farm

by kellinwood

On our drive to Monterey we saw a sign for blueberries and stopped at the Restoration Oaks U-Pick blueberry farm in Santa Ynez. You pick your own blueberries -- its a lot of fun and the fruit tastes way better than the store-bought stuff. We had a small carton of blueberries in our camper already and the taste did not even compare - the hand picked berries were far and above more flavorful. We eventually threw out the blueberries from the store since our hand-picked blueberries tasted so much better.

When you arrive they give you a small metal bucket to put the blueberries in. You go out into their field which is covered in netting to prevent the birds from stealing all of the goods. Blueberries are available on plants of several varieties. When you get back to the roadside stand with your blueberries, there is a $15 charge for a full bucket or $7.50 for a half bucket. Our half bucket of blueberries lasted the three of us for a week. We put them on cereal and even made blueberry pancakes!

Picking is seasonal so be sure to call ahead. The farm is located at 1980 Highway 101, Santa Ynez Valley, California.

< Zaca Lake, northeast of Santa Ynez Valley >
Santa Ynez area is a few area that I really liked for a day trip from L.A., or a nice relaxing weekend at Zaca Retreat. (I'm not sure if it is still available for public lodging.)

Around a couple dozen fine wineries in the valley, it's a joy driving along the picturesque valley road for a wine tasting tour.
