Lake Tahoe all the way around by painterdave
When you get tired of the casinos and the crowds you might consider getting in your car and driving completely around the lake. Why not bring a bottle of Napa Valley wine, some cheese and munchies--make a picnic of it. I would suggest going in a clock wise direction so that if you want to turn off and drive closer to the water, it will be an easy turn. Also, getting back on the highway is easier. The state line of California and Nevada goes right across the lake, so you will find casinos at two different places on the lake. The north shore has smaller and fewer casinos, but the is one called Cal Neva which was owned by Frank Sinatra at one time. The gaming commission of Nevada forced him to sell his interest because he had ties to the mafia.
The California side is way more developed with tourist traps, eateries and boat rental places. Expect to spend at least 3 hours with a stop for picnic time.
This drive is also beautiful at night. Just watch out for deer and lately bears. They are frequently hit by cars. You don't want to deal with that on your vacation. See the shot below for a sunset photo on the west side of the lake.
